Women ministers’ strength down to six into Modi’s 2.0 cabinet of 2019: Take a Look

New Delhi: Six women ministers were inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Cabinet at a grand ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan on Thursday evening with three of them getting cabinet berths.

Out of the six women cabinet ministers, four have served previously as Union Cabinet Ministers. These include Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Zubin Irani, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, and Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.

Nirmala Sitharaman

Nirmala Sitharaman, 60,  is a Rajya Sabha member and the second woman to helm the key ministry after former PM Indira Gandhi who had held the portfolio in the seventies. She was appointed as the Defence minister in September 2017.

Smriti Irani

BJP’s Giant killer, Smriti Irani, 43, who defeated Congress chief Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, has also taken oath as a Cabinet minister in the new government.

Irani became the youngest cabinet minister after the BJP won a massive victory in the Lok Sabha polls in 2014. She was assigned the Human Resource Development ministry and later, she also took charge of the ministry for textiles and the Information and Broadcasting ministry.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, 53, has secured a ministerial berth for the second consecutive term in PM Modi’s new Cabinet.  She was the former union minister for food processing and Member of Parliament from Bathinda.

She is the wife of Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, who has earlier served as the deputy chief minister of Punjab. Harsimrat defeated Congress legislator Amrinder Singh Raja  by a thin margin of 21,772 votes in a closely contested battle in the Lok Sabha polls.

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, 52, has been sworn in as a Minister of State in the new Cabinet on Thursday. She held the portfolio of Minister of State for Food Processing Industries in the outgoing government. She has been strongly promoting afforestation, social and cultural values, uplifting poor children and helping women from financially weak backgrounds.

Renuka Singh Saruta

Renuka Singh Saruta, 58, is a tribal leader of the BJP from Chattisgarh. She has also served in the Raman Singh government. In the 17th Lok Sabha Elections she turned  BJP’s favour in Sarguja.

Deboshree Chowdhury

Deboshree Chowdhury, is a  BJP leader from West Bengal where the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has successfully managed to win 18 seats in the 17th Lok Sabha Elections. She is a first timer in the newly elected government. On Thursday, she has taken oath as a Minister of State in the Modi Sarkar 2.0.
