New Delhi : Until Sourav Ganguly donned the skipper’s hat it was thought that India could never regularly defeat Pakistan in matches, said former Pakistan bowler Shoaib Akhtar as the ex-India captain is all set to head the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Akhtar also pointed out that with the ‘Prince of Kolkata’ becoming BCCI President, India would have a strong voice among ICC, which Ganguly can capitalise on to make some changes in the sport, such as the return of bodyline bowling and relaxation for fast bowlers.
“Ganguly becoming the BCCI President is very good news. Ganguly was exceptional in changing the shape of Indian cricket when he became the captain. In the 1990s, I never thought that India would be able to defeat Pakistan, but with Ganguly, all changed. When he became the captain, I saw him bringing in new faces like Sehwag, Yuvraj, Zaheer. He created an exceptional setup and finally I thought India could defeat Pakistan,” Akhtar said.
The Rawalpindi Express put out a video on his Youtube channel on Tuesday where he spoke about the changes he would like to see in the game.
“I want to see international cricket flourish. India has strong power when it comes to cricket, ICC always values India’s word. I want to see Test cricket saved by a cricketer who thrived in playing the longest format of the game. I want to see relaxation for fast bowlers, I want the return of bodyline bowling. There is too much of cricket, I want it to be checked. This is a new era of world cricket. Sourav can make a difference,” he added.
Akhtar, 44, hailed the 47-year-old Ganguly’s cricketing knowledge and he said the former skipper has an eye for scouting talent.
He also highlighted Ganguly’s struggle during his playing days.
Ganguly had to sit out of the team for a long time after a rift with the then coach Gregg Chappell.
“Ganguly has an eye for scouting talent. He set the benchmark really high after becoming the captain. But he had to suffer unfortunate circumstances in his career as well. When Gregg Chappell became the coach, he was treated unfairly, Akhtar said.
“He was fearless. Ganguly and I had many battles on the field. He was always said that if I do not go out to face Shoaib, how will I ask my teammates to face him. He is a great leader and he is very honest in picking the talent. He has great cricketing knowledge. Ganguly and I have good memories in playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League,” he added.
Ganguly on Monday had said that “it is a very important time in Indian cricket administration” after filing nomination for BCCI President.
“It is a very important time in the Indian cricket administration because of all that’s happened in the last three years. To be in a position where I can make a difference along with the team would be extremely satisfying. Hopefully, in the next few months we can put everything in place and bring back normalcy in Indian cricket,” Ganguly had told reporters.
Ganguly, however, will be able to serve as BCCI President only until September 2020. He has been holding posts in the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for the past five years where he currently serves as President. An administrator can only serve six years on the trot.
When asked about the priorities after winning the BCCI elections, Ganguly said: “For me, my biggest focus will be first-class cricket. I have been very vocal on looking after first-class players especially the amount of time they give to cricket because that’s your base and strength. I have written many a time in the last three years that enumerations need to increase many folds so that is going to be my first priority.”
The BCCI elections are scheduled to be held on October 23 but with Ganguly being the only candidate to file his nomination for the top post of Indian cricket, he is set to be elected unopposed. (ANI)

Kolkata (West Bengal): India football skipper Sunil Chhetri on Wednesday expressed disappointment with the team’s result against Bangladesh in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers.
India had to settle with a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata and with this, the road ahead has gotten difficult for the Blue Tigers.
Chhetri took to Twitter to express his disappointment and said: “We could not deliver a performance to match the atmosphere at the Salt Lake last night, and the dressing room is very disappointed about it. We could not capitalise on the chances we got, but this is a process on the pitch and in the stands. You turned up, we will keep attempting to”.
In the match between both sides, Saad Uddin had put Bangladesh in front in the first half, but India center-back Adil Khan equalised late in the game to draw the home side level.
The Blue Tigers were chasing the three points from the match. Chhetri had an early shot on goal saved by Bangladesh goalkeeper Ashraful Islam Rana.
India’s Bheke had a chance to goal in the opening minutes of the match as he won a free header from a corner. However, his header flew over the bar
As we moved closer to the half-time break, Uddin managed to get on to the end of a set-piece from the left flank, past an outstretched Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, to put Bangladesh in the lead.
India head coach Igor Stimac rolled the dice in the second half as he brought on playmaker Brandon Fernandes in place of Mandar Rao Dessai, while winger Lallianzuala Chhangte came on for center-back Anas Edathodika.
With less than two minutes of regulation time left, it was Adil Khan, who came up with the equaliser, as he glanced his header past the near post, and into the back of the net.
India gave it an almighty effort in the closing stages of the match. Four minutes into injury time, Sunil Chhetri brought down an aerial ball for an unmarked Manvir Singh, who volleyed it wide.
Both the teams ended the day with a point apiece, and India now remain on the fourth spot with two points in Group E of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers. (ANI)

Housefull 4: Struggling with high operation cost, the Indian Railways has come up with a unique idea to increase its revenue by promoting movies, art, culture, sports or even television shows.
The railways has decided to allow trains to be booked for promotional activities under a new scheme called “Promotion on Wheels”, under which special trains will be made available for promotion.
According to Railway Ministry, the makers of Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Housefull 4‘ have already booked a train for the film’s promotion.
The first special “Promotion on Wheels” train with eight coaches by the Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corportation (IRCTC) and the Western Railway, in coordination with the “Housefull 4” team, carrying celebrities and mediapersons, will leave Mumbai Central on Wednesday and reach New Delhi on Thursday.

“Under this initiative, the railways has approached many major production houses with upcoming films to use these FTR (Full Tariff Rates) trains to facilitate pan-India publicity and promotions of films across the length and breadth of the country.
The IRCTC shall be the nodal agency for handling such trains,” it said.

Riyadh [Saudi Arabia]: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday met Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his day-long tour to the country.
“During the meeting, they discussed close relations between the two countries, aspects of bilateral cooperation and the latest developments at the regional and international arena,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said in a statement on Twitter about the meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister and the Saudi Crown Prince.
Shortly after his arrival in the country, Khan met Saudi King and discussed “latest developments at the regional and international arenas and efforts exerted towards them.”
Khan’s visit came two days after his visit to Iran, the arch-rival of Saudi Arabia, in a bid to defuse tensions in the region. During his visit to the Kingdom, Khan was accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
This was Khan’s third visit to Saudi Arabia this year. His earlier visits were in May and September 2019. From the Saudi side, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman paid a state visit to Pakistan in February 2019.
Tensions in the region have been high for months, following US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose crushing sanctions that target Iran’s crude oil sales which have crippled its economy. Those sanctions came after Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers last year.
The tensions culminated in a September 14 attack on key Saudi oil infrastructure that halved the kingdom’s oil production. (ANI)

“He’s a bad actor and we like bad acting,” tweeted the Article 15 director on Saturday night.
He’s a bad actor and we like bad acting.

Soon, netizens started playing the guessing game. Many assumed the filmmaker had hinted at Prime Minister Modi, who on Saturday shared pictures of his beach clean-up drive at Mahabalipuram.
Sharing a picture of the PM under Sinha’s tweet, one user replied: “Modiji ke baat kar rahe ho sir Hume pata hai (Sir we know you are talking about Modi ji). “
Another shared a picture of the PM and wrote: “Yeh admi meri baat kar raha hai” (this man is talking about me)”.
Another comment reads: But bad actors, too, can teach good things. Worth commending that if PM can, we can too. Only need is to find our own inspiration.”
Users also speculated if the filmmaker was not very fond of the Prime Minister and hence was tweeting indirect jibes.
On the work front, Anubhav Sinha has just wrapped up the shoot of his next film Thappad in Lucknow. The film features Taapsee Pannu, Manav Kaul, Ratna Pathak Shah and Dia Mirza. It is slated to release on the occasion of Women’s Day next year, which falls on March 8.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram will be produced before a Delhi Court in connection with INX media money laundering case on Monday.
This comes two days after it was reported by ANI that the probe agency is likely to arrest Chidambaram on October 14 as a special court in Delhi had directed to produce the former union minister in connection with the case.
Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar has ordered to produce Chidambaram in the court today at 3 pm.
During the proceedings on October 12, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing ED in the matter, had told the court that Chidambaram’s custodial interrogation is required as the agency wants to seek information related to the shell company in abroad and 17 bank accounts highligted in the case.
Even the Supreme Court had observed that his custodial interrogation is required in the case, Mehta had asserted.
Chidambaram is currently in judicial custody in Tihar jail in a corruption case related to the alleged scam being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The case pertains to an FIR registered by the CBI for alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 by Chidambaram when he was the Union finance minister.
The ED is investigating the alleged offence of money laundering that arose out of the FIR. (ANI)

Washington D.C: The methods you use to lock your phone can reveal your age, claims a study.
The study conducted by the University of British Columbia was presented last month at ‘CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems’ in Glasgow, Scotland.
“As researchers working to protect smartphones from unauthorised access, we need to first understand how users use their devices,” said Konstantin Beznosov, an electrical and computer engineering professor at UBC who supervised the research.
“By tracking actual users during their daily interactions with their device, we now have real-world insights that can be used to inform future smartphone designs,” added Beznosov.
The analysis also showed that older users used their phone less frequently than younger users. For every 10-years interval in age, there was a corresponding 25 per cent decrease in the number of user sessions. In other words, a 25-year-old might use their phone 20 times a day, but a 35-year-old might use it only 15 times. The study tracked 134 volunteers, ranging from 19 to 63 years of age, through a custom app installed on their Android phones.
For two consecutive months, the app collected data on lock and unlock events, choice of auto or manual lock and whether the phone was locked or unlocked while in motion. The app also recorded the duration of user sessions.
The study also found gender differences in authentication choices. As they age, men are much more likely to rely on auto locks, as opposed to manually locking their devices, compared to women.
In terms of overall use, women on average use their phone longer than men, with women in their 20s using their smartphones significantly longer than their male peers.
However, the balance shifts with age, with men in their 50s logging longer usage sessions than women of the same age.
While the study didn’t look at the reasons for these behaviours, Beznosov said the findings can help smartphone companies design better products.
“Factors such as age should be considered when designing new smartphone authentication systems, and devices should allow users to pick the locking method that suits their needs and usage patterns,” he said. (ANI)

Hingoli (Maharashtra): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and said his “involvement in state Assembly polls means BJP is going to win the elections 100 per cent”.
Ahead of state Assembly polls, CM Yogi attended several public rallies in several places in Maharashtra, including Hingoli and Yavatmal on Sunday.
“Rahul Gandhi’s involvement in Maharashtra Assembly elections means BJP is going to win the election 100 per cent. Defeat is certain for whichever party Rahul Gandhi supports. His presence has confirmed the defeat of Congress and NCP,” claimed Yogi.
“Congress never made any honest efforts to fulfil Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s dreams. But our Prime Minister and Union Home Minister are the only people who have taken so many initiatives to fulfil Ambedkar’s dreams. They revoked Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and I would like to thank both of them for this decision,” he added.
Taking a dig at the Congress party, he further said: “Everyone has decided that the alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena and Republican Party of India (RPI) will come back to power in Maharashtra and a lot of people can be seen leaving the election ground due to this fear. When Congress used to rule in Maharashtra and Delhi under UPA, the party’s name always reflected in the books of corruption and cheating,” said Yogi.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi while addressing an election rally in Latur earlier on Sunday, targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly ignoring real issues. “Sending a rocket to the moon will not feed the youth of the country,” he said.
“Crores of youths in the country are unemployed. When the election comes, they don’t talk about it. Youths are saying that they don’t have any future and Modi ji says look towards the moon. India has sent a rocket. It is good.”
The Congress leader said the BJP-led government has destroyed the Indian economy. “They will talk about Kashmir, Article 370, moon but they will not utter a single word about the real issues,” he said.

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Postpaid mobile services in the remaining areas of Jammu and Kashmir will be functional from 12 pm today.
“Having reviewed the situation, a decision has now been taken to restore mobile phone services in the remaining areas of Jammu and Kashmir. All postpaid mobile services, irrespective of the telecom operator will stand restored and be functional from 12 noon, Monday, October 14, 2019. This will cover all 10 districts of Kashmir province,” Rohit Kansal, Principal Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir had said on Saturday.
All network and landline connections were suspended across Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, in view of security concerns in the region following Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370.
Although the landline network was restored in phases, restrictions remained on the usage of mobile devices in various parts of the Valley.
Kansal, on Saturday, had said that landline facilities have been fully restored in the region and mobile services are also back in some parts.
“Telephone landlines have been fully restored, and have been functioning for over six weeks. Mobile services were restored in Jammu, Ladakh and subsequently in Kupwara,” the Principal Secretary had said.
Restrictions on movement have been removed in 99 per cent of the areas in Jammu and Kashmir, Kansal informed.
“Since August 16 there has been a gradual removal of the restrictions and by the first week of September most restrictions were removed, barring 8-10 police stations movement restrictions have now been completely removed. Over 99 per cent of the area of Jammu and Kashmir has absolutely no restriction on movement,” Kansal told reporters.
The decision to restore mobile phone services comes days after Jammu and Kashmir Governor announced the withdrawal of security advisory for tourists from October 10.
The administration had also said that tourists desirous of visiting the region will be provided with the necessary assistance and logistic support.
As normalcy started returning, postpaid mobile phone services were resumed in five districts – Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri and Poonch – of the Jammu region on August 29.
The Central government had on August 5 abrogated Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and also bifurcated the state into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. (ANI)

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Dismissing concerns about economic slowdown, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday cited the earnings of three movies on October 2, saying they collectively earned Rs 120 crore in a day and hence the economy of the country is “sound”.
Addressing a press conference, Prasad said: “On October 2, three movies were released. Film trade analyst Komal Nahta had said that the day saw earning of over Rs 120 crore, a record by the three movies. The economy of the country is sound. That is why there is a return of Rs 120 crore in a day.”
“I was the Information and Broadcasting Minister in the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government. I am fond of movies. There has been a huge business of movies,” he added.
The economic growth slowed to a seven-year low to 5 per cent in April as compared to 8 per cent in June quarter a year ago, as per the government data.
The slowdown was largely due to a sharp dip in the manufacturing sector and agriculture output, the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation had said in a statement.
The Union Minister termed the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) report as “false”.
“That report is false. I gave you 10 relevant data, not one is present in the report. We never said we will give government jobs to everyone. Few people tried to mislead in a planned fashion,” said Prasad.
In May, the Centre had made public the NSSO’s Periodic Labour Force Survey report that placed the unemployment rate at 6.1 per cent for the year 2017-18, the highest in 45 years.
The report placed the unemployment rate among men at 6.2 per cent and women at 5.7 per cent, combining both rural and urban areas and the overall rate at 6.1 per cent.
Prasad said that Maharashtra government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis completed his five-year term and stated that the people of the state respect their leaders.
“Fadnavis has successfully completed his term of five years. This clearly states that the people of the state respect their leader as the BJP has a culture of respecting the leader who heads the state. Fadnavis has a clean image. It is a big achievement,” said the Union Minister.
Making a veiled reference to P Chidambaram, who served as the then Home Minister when the 26/11 attacks took place, Prasad said: “In 2008, there was an attack in Mumbai and both the Centre and the state governments at that time were so helpless. The Home Minister at that time said ‘Sorry Mumbai’ and he is in jail now.”
“Today nobody has the guts to attack Mumbai or Maharashtra. They know if they carry out an attack, they will have to pay a very heavy cost,” he said while reiterating the Centre’s resolve of zero tolerance against terror. (ANI)

Udaipur (Rajasthan): In commemoration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a large number of books on the Father of the Nation are on display at the Udaipur Book Fair which kick-started on Saturday.
However, also on display at the fair celebrating the Mahatma, is Nathuram Godse’s ‘Why I Killed Gandhi’ which is being sold at several book stalls here.
On being asked, Prakash, a bookseller said: “We sell a large variety of books to our readers. If someone likes to read about Mahatma Gandhi, they can find various books at our book fair. If someone likes to read about Nathuram Godse, we do have books for those readers as well. We do admire Mahatma Gandhi but selling books is our business so we do keep books of all kinds.”
While the booksellers here believe that selling all varieties of books is a part of their business, some readers at the fair think that it is important to be aware of all perspectives.
“Books are a medium to gain knowledge and information. People should know about their history, as to why Nathuram Godse killed Mahatma Gandhi. What were the reasons behind it. It is very important for students to know about that part of history too. Books are the medium through which they can gain more knowledge about several issues,” said a customer.
The nine-day book fair has been organised by the National Book Trust of India. (ANI)
