CBI arrests Chidambaram in INX Media case amid dramatic scenes

New Delhi: Amidst dramatic scenes, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram was arrested in the INX Media case on Wednesday night after he failed to get relief from the Supreme Court over CBI and ED’s pursuit of him as the matter was not heard by the court despite repeated efforts of his lawyers.

After his arrest by the CBI from his Jor Bagh his residence, Chidambaram, 73, was taken to headquarters of the probe agency. He is likely to be produced before a CBI court at the Rouse Avenue on Thursday.

Earlier, the former Finance Minister made a dramatic appearance at the Congress headquarters here and addressed a press conference in which he rejected the charges against him and his son in the INX Media case and said “lies” were being spread by “pathological liars.”

He then left for his Jor Bagh residence from the Congress office and teams of the CBI and the ED reached soon after.

He was arrested in the glare of media after over an hour-long drama during which some officials scaled the gates to gain entry to his house. Supporters of the former Finance Minister raised slogans and tried to stop officials from taking him away. Some of them also blocked the road in protest.

Two of them climbed on the car in which Chidambaram was being taken and had to be brought down. An official took to scooter to move away from reporters chasing him for information. CBI and ED had issued a lookout circular against him.

After his arrest, Chidambaram’s pre-arrest bail plea in the Supreme Court has become infructuous.

CBI sources said that Chidambaram was arrested on an arrest warrant issued by a competent court.

Earlier in the day, Chidambaram’s Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking a pre-arrest bail was not cleared by the Supreme Court registry as it had certain defects.

A bench headed by senior-most judge Justice N V Ramana referred the plea back to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

The CJI, however, had commenced hearing in the Ayodhya dispute case due to which Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal was unable to mention the matter before him for urgent hearing.

The CBI and ED filed caveats in the Supreme Court over Chidambaram’s plea seeking protection from arrest in the INX media case.

Congress party rallied behind Chidambaram with party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi expressing their full support to him. DMK leader M K Stalin also came out in his support.

At the press conference, Chidambaram was flanked by senior party leaders Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge, Salman Khurshid, Vivek Tankha and KC Venugopal.

The Congress message for the press conference did not say that Chidambaram will be present.

Rejecting the charges against him and his son Karti in the INX Media case, Chidambaram said FIR does not impute any wrongdoing by him and there was no chargesheet either by the CBI or ED before the competent authority.

Reading from a prepared statement, Chidambaram dismissed suggestions that he was hiding from the law.

Chidambaram said he will respect the law even if applied “with an unequal hand by the investigating agencies” and hoped the investigative agencies will also respect the law.

“In the name of freedom, I can only hope and pray that investigating agencies will also respect the law in the present circumstances and wait for the decision of SC on Friday,” he said.

He said the whole of last night and today he was working with his lawyers and preparing the petition.

“In the last 24 hours, much has happened that has caused concern to some and confusion to many. My statement today is to dispel that concern. In the INX Media case, I have not been accused of any offence nor is anyone else including any member of my family accused of any offence,” he said.

“In fact, there is no charge sheet filed by the CBI or the ED before the competent court. Moreover, the FIR recorded by the CBI does not impute to me any wrongdoing yet there is a widespread impression that grave offences have been committed and I and my son have committed that offence. Nothing can be further from the truth. These are lies spread by pathological liars,” he said.

He said despite impatient pleas of his lawyers, the cases “were not listed for hearing today, neither they will be listed tomorrow but will be listed on Friday.”

“I bow down to the orders of the Supreme Court. Between now and Friday I shall work with the clear conscious and my head held high. I shall respect the law even if it is applied with an unequal hand by the investigating agencies,” he said.

The Congress leader, who is a Rajya Sabha MP, said he was aghast that he was accused of hiding from the law.

“On the contrary, I was seeking the protection of the law. I was accused of running away from justice. On the contrary, I was engaged in the pursuit of justice,” he said.

“Some days ago when I spoke in Parliament, I had said that every judge in the country will uphold the liberty of the citizen. I had said that the collective conscience and the institutional memory of the court as a venerable institution will guide all judges of the country. As much as I believe in liberty, I also believe in the wisdom of our judges,” he said.

“So until Friday and beyond, let us hope that the lamp of liberty will shine bright and illuminate the whole country,” he said.

Chidambaram said when he was summoned by the CBI and then the Enforcement Directorate to appear for questioning, he sought interim protection against arrest and was granted interim protection by the high court.

“I have enjoyed it for the last 13 to 15 months. The matter was finally heard on January 25 and the judgment reserved. After seven months, the high court was pleased to dismiss my pre-arrest bail application. My lawyers advised me to move the Supreme Court. On my behalf, they did so yesterday evening and today. They appealed to Supreme Court to list it urgently and meanwhile grant me interim protection,” he said.

“While senior counsel was moving the Supreme Court, I worked with my lawyers through the night last night to prepare the papers. Today throughout the day I was with my lawyers following the proceedings in the Supreme Court,” he said.

Chidambaram said the most precious Article of the Constitution of India is Article 21 that guarantees life and liberty.

“If I was asked to choose between life and liberty, I should unhesitatingly choose liberty. Why are years up to 1947 called the years of freedom struggle because to win the freedom we must struggle, to preserve the freedom we must struggle,” he said.

Rahul accused the Modi government of using the ED, CBI and “sections of a spineless media to character assassinate” Chidambaram and said he strongly condemns “this disgraceful misuse of power.”

Priyanka Gandhi alleged that the Congress leader was “shamefully hunted down” and vowed to “stand by him and continue to fight for the truth”.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, however, dismissed the Congress allegations and said BJP had no involvement in the issue.

The Congress leader’s lawyers had moved the apex court against Tuesday’s Delhi High Court order dismissing his anticipatory bail plea regarding cases filed by the CBI and the ED related to the alleged INX Media scam.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the plea of Chidambaram and said this is a case of money laundering of monumental magnitude.

The Delhi High Court had, in its order, said that the grant of bail in cases like this will send a wrong message to the society.

Chidambaram, in his petition, said that he granted approval to INX Media’s proposal in the “normal course of official business.”

The Congress leader said that the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), which was constituted in order to promote foreign investment in the country, unanimously approved the proposal of INX Media for approval for FDI.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered an FIR alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister.

Based on the FIR, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case against him.

Chidambaram’s son Karti has also been named in the two cases. He was arrested on February 28, 2018, by the CBI and was later released on bail. The ED had attached properties belonging to him.

On July 4, a Delhi court had allowed Indrani Mukerjee, the former head of the INX Media, to turn an approver in the CBI case.

The CBI had on late Tuesday night put up a notice outside his residence to appear before them in two hours prompting his lawyer to request the investigation agency not to take any coercive action until the hearing of Chidambaram’s plea in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. (ANI)

Sreesanth thanks Supreme Court, BCCI after his ban reduced to seven years

Kochi (Kerala): Indian fast bowler S Sreesanth on Tuesday thanked the Supreme Court and the BCCI after his life ban was reduced to seven years by the ombudsman DK Jain.

“God has been extremely kind, thank you very much for all the support. It was a struggling phase but I have ruled that phase. Thank you very much whoever supported me or did not support me. Thanks to the BCCI, thanks to the Supreme Court, and Ombudsman DK Jain, for giving me an opportunity from next year,” Sreesanth told reporters.

The 36-year-old said that the coming year will be used in a timely manner to fulfill some of the commitments made in the film industry and make a proper return to cricket.

“I need to get in the match fitness and my focus will be on the game. In the end last six years, I survived because of the entertainment industry. I have certain commitments, which I have to finish,” Sreesanth said.

“It is great news for me. Now, I have a proper road map to follow. I will not disappoint any of those people who supported me, especially from Kerala. I’ll make sure that I train really hard and make a comeback,” he added.

Earlier, the BCCI’s ombudsman Justice (Retd) DK Jain issued the order on August 7 but made the announcement on Tuesday that Sreesanth’s ban will end on September 13 next year.

“I am of the view that banning Sreesanth from participating in any kind of commercial cricket or from associating with any activities of the BCCI or its affiliates, for a period of seven years with effect from 13.09.2013, i.e., the date from which, the period of ban imposed by the Disciplinary Committee had commenced, will meet the ends of justice,” Jain said in an order that was issued on August 7.

Sreesanth was banned by the BCCI for a lifetime in August 2013 along with his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan for indulging in alleged spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that year.

sreesanth has changed beyond recognition

Upon investigation, the 36-year-old was found guilty by the BCCI and the board had imposed a life ban on the cricketer, which was later challenged by Sreesanth in Kerala High Court which upheld the life ban. Sreesanth then moved to the apex court, pleading that the High Court verdict to be set aside.

On March 15, the Supreme Court set aside the life ban imposed on Sreesanth by the BCCI and asked the cricket body to reconsider his plea within three months. (ANI)

“Notice under what law?”: P Chidambaram’s lawyer to CBI on 2-hour notice in INX media scam

New Delhi: Congress MP P Chidambaram’s lawyer has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation under what law his client has been told to appear within two hours in an alleged corruption case. The CBI on Tuesday posted a notice outside Mr Chidambaram’s house, ordering him to appear before it “within two hours”.

“I am instructed to state that your notice fails to mention the provision of law under which my client has been issued a notice to appear within two hours,” said Arshdeep Singh Khurana, Mr Chidambaram’s lawyer, according to news agency ANI.

“He (Mr Chidambaram) has been permitted by the Supreme Court to mention the urgent special leave petition against the order before the court at 10:30 am today. I, therefore, request you not to take any coercive action against my client till then and await the hearing at 10:30 am,” the lawyer said in a letter to the CBI, ANI reported.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has put up a notice outside the residence of former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram asking him to appear before them in the next two hours.

Yesterday, the Delhi High Court had dismissed Chidambaram’s both anticipatory bail pleas in connection with INX Media case.

“Whereas it appears that you are acquainted with the facts and circumstances of the case noted below, which I am now investigating under Chapter XII of the Code of Criminal Procedure, you are hereby directed to attend before me within two hours of the receipt of this notice for the purpose of investigation of case,” read the notice to Chidambaram by investigating officer R. Parthasarathy, Deputy Superintendent of Police, CBI.

“Particulars of the case: RC 11/2017/EOU-IV/EO-II under section 120-B IPC r/w Section 420 IPC and Section 8 & Section 13 (2) r/w 13 (1) (d) of P.C. Act, 1988 against M/s. INX Media (P) Ltd. / INX News (P) Ltd. and others,” it added.

Congress, P Chidambaram

Initially, a team of CBI officials had reached Chidambaram’s Jor Bagh residence but left after not finding him there. Shortly later, a team of ED officials also went to his residence and failed to locate him.

The officials refused to talk to a horde of media persons who sought to know whether they had come to arrest the former union minister.

Earlier on Wednesday, the High Court rejected the former finance minister’s anticipatory bail plea in the two cases filed by the CBI and the ED related to his alleged role in INX Media scam.

Aircel-Maxis scam

Chidambaram’s legal team consisting of top lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi will approach the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking a stay on the High Court order.

“Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has asked us to appear before the senior-most judge of the top court in the morning tomorrow,” Sibal told reporters after approaching Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi in the court. (ANI)

Will offer golden brick if Ram Mandir is built in Ayodhya: Prince Yakub

Hyderabad (Telangana): Prince Yakub Habeebuddin Tucy, a Mughal descendant, said that he will offer a gold brick if Ram Temple is built in Ayodhya.

“If the Ram Mandir is going to be built in Ayodhya, then we are going to offer golden brick for the construction of the temple. I have already filed a petition in the Supreme Court… We are appealing to the Supreme Court to listen to us because Waqf Board is not the owner of the Ayodhya land,” Prince Yakub told ANI here.

“The Masjid was constructed there in the year 1529. It was built for the Army and Commandos and that is private property. We are legal title owners of the land. Even the Supreme Court has admitted in 2005 that I am the grandson of Shah Jahan,” Prince Yakub claimed.

He further stated that if the Supreme Court gives the ownership of the land to him, then he will hand it over to the government of India.

“If the Supreme Court will admit our case and give the title ownership then I will give the total property to the government of India for building Ram Temple in Ayodhya and will give golden brick for the construction of the temple,” he said.

Notably, A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court did not hear the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit on Monday due to unavailability of Justice S A Bobde.

According to court sources, Justice Bobde was unwell.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, has been hearing the case on a day-to-day basis since August 6.

Senior lawyer C S Vaidyanathan, appearing for Ram Lala Virajman, was scheduled to continue with his arguments on Monday.

Fourteen appeals are pending before the apex court against the 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict which ordered equal division of the 2.77-acre disputed land in Ayodhya among the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla.

The 16th-century Babri Masjid was demolished on December 6, 1992. (ANI)

Either Centre no longer respect RSS’ views, or they don’t believe there is an issue in J-K: Priyanka

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday took a dig at the central government and said that either they no longer respect RSS’ views or they don’t believe that there is an issue in Jammu and Kashmir.

Her statement comes after Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh’s Arun Kumar in a statement said, “Attempts are being made to create unnecessary controversy over some remarks by Mohan Bhagwat in his speech at a programme in Delhi. Highlighting the importance of resolving all issues in the society through cordial dialogue he had called upon everyone to exchange views on a sensitive issue like reservation. As far as RSS is concerned, it has spelled its stand many times that it completely stands for reservation to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs and economically backward.”

Referring to his statement, Priyanka tweeted, “So the RSS has declared in a tweet that all ‘issues in the society’ should be resolved through cordial dialogue? I suppose either Modiji and his government no longer respect the RSS’s views or they don’t believe that there is an “issue” in Jammu and Kashmir. Interesting.”

Ram temple should be built at Ram Janmabhoomi, says Mohan Bhagwat

Speaking at the event, Bhagwat had said that there should be conversation in a “harmonious atmosphere” between those in favour of reservation and those against it.

The Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) criticised Bhagwat’s remarks claiming that it exposed the “anti-Dalit-backward face” of the RSS and the BJP. (ANI)

Shivraj mocks Rahul, says he has become ‘Ranchoddas Gandhi’

Panaji (Goa): Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday said he does not expect Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to speak on the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. He feels Rahul has become “Ranchoddas Gandhi”.

On August 5, the Central government had announced its decision to withdraw special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcated it into two union territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

While speaking here, Chouhan launched a scathing attack at the Congress party and said that it is falling apart.

“Congress is falling apart. Madam (Sonia Gandhi) and Rahul Gandhi haven’t said anything till date. I demand that Sonia ji should clear Congress’ viewpoint in the matter (Article 370),” Chouhan said.

“I don’t expect Rahul Gandhi to speak on the matter (Article 370) because he has become Ranchoddas Gandhi. As president of the party, it was his job to strengthen the party after loss. But he didn’t do so,” he added.

Following Centre’s decision on Article 370, Rahul Gandhi had said that reports of violence and people being killed in Jammu and Kashmir have surfaced. He also called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to apprise the nation about the situation in the region.

Let us free PoK and merge it with India: Jitendra Singh

Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir): Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday echoed sentiments of his cabinet colleague Rajnath Singh on merging Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) with India.

“As the parliament has unanimously agreed, let us free Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and merge it with India. Let us pray to the almighty that we get the chance to see this in our lifetime,” Singh said.

This comes after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that PoK will be on top of the agenda if talks are held with Pakistan in future. He added that dialogue will only be held if the neighbouring nation stops supporting terror.

“Why should there be talks? On what issues there would be talks? Talks with Pakistan would begin only after it stops patronising terrorism. If talks begin, it would now only be on the PoK and no other issue,” he said. (ANI)

Waterlogging and traffic snarls in many parts as rain lashes Delhi-NCR

New Delhi: As moderate rains lashed the national capital and its adjoining areas on Sunday morning, traffic was thrown out of gear with vehicles moving at snail’s speed due to waterlogging.

Commuters were stuck in the traffic jam for a few minutes at major junctions such as Dhaula Kuan, DND Flyover, AIIMS, Nigambodh Ghat due to ankle-deep water. Stretches around Pitampura and Kamla Nagar were also snarled due to this.

However, the moderate rain in the capital has brought around regions’ air quality today to the ‘good’ condition. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting (SAFAR), the overall air quality index (AQI) of Delhi, which was at 31, falling in the good category.

Delhi and its adjoining areas such as Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad are likely to receive moderate rains for next few days with minimum and maximum temperatures hovering around 25 degree Celsius and 34 degree Celsius, stated India Meteorological Department in its weather forecast bulletin.

The relative humidity in these regions is likely to oscillate between 87 per cent to 92 per cent for the next few days. (ANI)

After failed UNSC bid, Pakistan plays victim card with international media

New Delhi: It’s been 12-days since India announced its decision to reorganise the constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir, ever since then Pakistan has ramped up its rhetoric against New Delhi and is endlessly trying to internationalise the strictly internal Indian matter of Jammu and Kashmir. India’s action has rattled Islamabad so much so that it hurriedly sent its foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to China to seek its help at the United Nations Security Council and use the Asian giant’s bully pulpit in the region.

Pakistan has launched an all-out campaign from all its embassies against New Delhi and knocked every door for help. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has abandoned all domestic policy reforms that he promised at the time of elections to improve the dire condition of the country’s economy and begun on virulent attacks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.

However, so far, Islamabad’s panic calls have failed to mark its way to the international community. In an effort to bring the matter to United Nations Security Council, Pakistan wrote twice to the body, urging it to begin emergency meeting on the issue. After failing to do so, Pakistan sought China’s help. Even at the UNSC, it had to bite dust.

At the end of the meeting on Friday, China and Pakistan stood isolated as member after member refused to endorse their position.

Moreover, international media has not taken Pakistan’s media outreach seriously. Despite being flooded with updated photographs and dodgy video testimonies, by and large the international media is sceptical of Pakistan’s charges of human rights violations by India in Jammu and Kashmir. Islamabad’s own track road in human right violations in Baluchistan and the fact that it sponsors terrorism in Afghanistan and India is not a secret. Recently Imran Khan himself admitted in the US to a journalist that his country has 30,000-40,000 terrorists.

“The Pakistan army’s own shabby treatment of journalists, opposition leaders and ethnic movements representing the minority Baluch and Pashtuns, makes it hard for Islamabad to argue that Kashmiris will be better off in Pakistan,” wrote Journalist Sadanand Dhume in an article published in the Wall Street Journal.

Pakistan has a long-held policy to create unrest and tensions in neighbouring countries especially in India and Afghanistan by backing jihadist groups. Except China which has a transactional relationship with Pakistan, no country with significant clout has come forward to support Pakistan.

“Pakistan, which has long made Kashmir a central plank of its foreign policy, lacks the wherewithal to force India’s hand. By backing jihadist groups in India and Afghanistan and neglecting its economy, Islamabad has ensured that it lacks the stature to make India take its views on board,” Dhume added.

Similar sentiments were echoed in the New York Times by New York Times journalist Maria Abi-Habib.

“As Pakistan marks its independence day next week, it increasingly feels like a nation with its back against the wall, with few options to protect its existential interests. Its economy is teetering on the brink of collapse, and its international allies have either stayed silent over Kashmir or defected in support of India,” Maria wrote.

Four out of five permanent members in the United Nations did not support the Pakistan contentions over India’s decision. A recent example is Imran Khan failing to get the support of the United States despite his highly publicised visit last month to Washington DC where he supposedly struck a friendship with President Trump. During a phone conversation last week with Khan, Trump made it clear that Kashmir issue should be resolved through a bilateral dialogue between India and Pakistan.

Russia became the first UNSC member to support India. It said India’s action to remove Article 370 its internal matter and was under the constitutional framework.

“When Pakistan agreed after the September 11, 2001 attacks to help the United States fight terrorist groups, it asked for a favor in return –American help mediating on Kashmir and pressing India to make concessions. When the United States refused, Pakistan felt betrayed. Just last month Pakistanis felt more upbeat about their country’s prospects. Mr. Khan had returned from a visit to the White House where he met with Mr. Trump, who promised to intervene on Kashmir. But India’s swift action days later to strip Kashmir of its autonomy plunged Pakistan back into isolation,” Maria wrote in an article.

Adding to its woes, Islamabad was not able to convince even the Muslim world to back it in raising the issue of Kashmir. Two of the OIC member states, Maldives and UAE said Kashmir is an internal matter of India

“The biggest blow came from the influential United Arab Emirates, which stated that Kashmir was an internal matter for India, withdrawing any support to raise the issue internationally,” Maria added.

American diplomat Richard N. Mass is of the view that even after facing defeat in multiple forums Pakistan will continue to sponsor terrorism.

“There is a possibility that Pakistan will respond by renewing its support for terrorism, which could lead to another war between Pakistan and India, two nuclear-armed countries. Against this backdrop, the US would be unwise to turn to Pakistan as a strategic partner. Pakistan sees a friendly government in Kabul as vital to its security and competition with arch-rival India. There is little reason to believe that the military and intelligence services, which continue to run Pakistan, will rein in the Taliban or rule out terrorism,” he wrote in Project Syndicate.

Ever since India announced its decision to do away with Article 370, Islamabad has escalated its virulent tactics against New Delhi and tried to involve the international community in the matter.

Pakistan has alleged that India’s decision of revoking the provisions under Article 370 will not only threaten the regional peace but also the world peace. However other than a few op-ed articles in a few publications in London, international media is not buying into Islamabad’s propagandist claims.

JNU should be renamed as MNU, Modi Narendra University: Hans Raj Hans

New Delhi: BJP MP and artiste Hans Raj Hans on Saturday said that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) should be renamed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi as ‘MNU’.

The BJP North West Delhi legislator, who was at the University to perform at an event ‘Ek shaam shaheedon ke naam’, also hit out at the Nehru-Gandhi family while speaking about the Kashmir issue. “We are facing the brunt of the mistakes committed by our elders,” he said.

“Pray that we all live in peace and no bombing takes place. I would say we should rename JNU after Prime Minister Narendra Modi as MNU. Something should be named after Modi ji,” said Hans Raj.

After the event, the BJP lawmaker spoke to media persons and said that it was Jawaharlal Nehru who committed mistakes in the past (in reference to Jammu and Kashmir).

When asked about his comments on renaming the University, he said: “I came to JNU for the first time… have heard a lot about JNU but now changes have come due to the efforts made by the Modi government. Prime Minister Modi has done a lot for the nation and it is because of his work that I said JNU should be renamed as ‘Modi Narendra University’.”

BJP legislator Manoj Tiwari, who performed along with Hans Raj at the event organised by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), echoed similar sentiments.

“We are seeing a positive JNU here. In the past some have given slogans of ‘Bharat tere tukde honge’ in the University but this institution has grown and changed with time. We heard students raising slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’,” said Tiwari.

On Hans Raj’s statement on renaming JNU, he said at times we say things out of excitement but that does not mean one would follow it. “Hans Raj ji says what he feels. He said so because he admires Modi ji,” said Tiwari.

The Delhi BJP chief further said that India will take steps to take back Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

“I am not an exception, every child of the nation is saying that Pakistan occupied Kashmir is a part of India. We will take steps to take it back,” he asserted. (ANI)

All countries should isolate nations aiding terror: VP Naidu

Vilnius [Lithuania]: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has stressed the need of collective action from all countries to tackle terrorism and also to isolate those nations who aid and abet terror.

“Terrorism is one of the major challenges confronting the world today. All the nations must intensify their collective efforts and strive to eliminate the menace of terrorism and also isolate nations which aid and abet terrorism,” he said in a joint presser along with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Saturday.

India has extended e-Visa facility to Lithuanian nationals for ease of mobility, Naidu said.

Urging Lithuanian businesses to take advantage of economic opportunities in India, the Vice President said, “We would also be happy to have Lithuania as our energy transformation partner as India plans to generate 100 GW from solar energy by 2022.”

Both countries on Saturday signed 3 MoUs to boost cultural, agricultural and legal cooperation. The signing of the agreements was witnessed by Naidu and Nauseda.

“Diversifying a historic relationship. VP @MVenkaiahNaidu and President Gitanas Nauseda of #Lithuania witnessed the signing of three MoUs to strengthen agricultural, cultural and legal cooperation between the two countries,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Naidu is on a three-nation visit to the Balkan nations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. He arrived in Lithuania on Saturday on the first leg of his visit.

The Vice President was received by the country’s foreign minister Linas Linkevicius, India’s Ambassador to Lithuania Tsewang Namgyal and others.

Naidu proceeded to the Presidential Palace where he was received by Nauseda. Both leaders held one-on-one talks and delegation-level negotiations to review the bilateral ties.

During the talks, the two sides agreed the need to make the UN Security Council more representative to reflect the realities of today and address current global challenges.

Lithuania has also backed India to have permanent membership in an expanded and reformed UN Security Council.

The Vice President received a copy of the book ‘History of Lithuania’ in Sanskrit.

“Happy to have received a copy of the book ‘History of #Lithuania’ in #Sanskrit. Lithuanian is the oldest Indo-European language & it has strong links with Sanskrit. I hope that many more books on Lithuanian history, culture and society get published in Indian languages,” read a tweet from the Vice President of India. (ANI)

J-K: Locals in Kupwara await surge in job opportunities after abrogation of Article 370

Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir): Days after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, locals of Kupwara district are now in hope of better employment opportunities in the region, while some of them have requested the central government to take strong actions against corruption.

“From what we are seeing, the situation is not that difficult, but not normal too. In their mind, people here think that they will not get jobs. Unemployment is the main cause here. People are protesting for this reason too thinking that now they won’t get jobs. But I don’t think this is correct as now more businesses will open up here. There will be new jobs,” said a local.

Another one added, “Few people are not understanding what exactly abrogation of Article 370 means. I feel that there is no loss in it. It’s profitable because the young generation will get jobs as big industries will come here. Even people, who are talented in different fields like dance, singing, among others will get chance. I feel the outcome will be good.”

The clampdown was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on August 4, a day before both the Houses of Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019, and adopted the resolution to scrap Article 370 and Article 35A.

One local has requested the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi that a “major issue in Jammu and Kashmir is corruption, so the CBI and other agencies should keep an eye on it to take strong actions.”

Irfan Bhadan, chairman of Gurjar Pahadi Forum said, “After abrogation of Article 370, we are looking forward for development and employment in the valley.”

The government agencies started easing restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday after the situation in the Valley continued to remain peaceful for the 12th day since the abrogation of provisions of Article 370 that gave a special status to the state. (ANI)

PM Modi departs for two-day visit to Bhutan

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emplaned for a two-day visit to Bhutan with an aim to strengthen bilateral ties with the Himalayan nation in various fields.

This is Modi’s second visit to Bhutan and his first since his re-election as Prime Minister.

“A central pillar of our ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Continuing the high-level exchanges between the two countries, PM @narendramodi departs for #Bhutan on a two-day visit. This is PM’s second visit to Bhutan and the first since his re-election,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said on Friday that India-Bhutan partnership forms an important pillar of New Delhi’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and expressed confidence that his two-day trip will promote the time-tested ties between the two countries.

Modi will arrive at the Paro International Airport and will officially begin his engagements by visiting the Simtokha Dzong, a monastery built by Ngawang Namgyal who unified Bhutan.

During the visit, the Prime Minister is expected to receive audiences with Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan and Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth King of Bhutan and hold talks with his Bhutanese counterpart Dr Lotay Tshering.

On the second day of his visit, Modi is scheduled to visit the National Memorial Chorten. He will also be attending a cultural performance at Tashichhodzong – a Buddhist monastery – hosted in his honour.

The Prime Minister will also address the students at the Royal University of Bhutan.

During the visit, 10 MoUs are slated to be signed between the two close neighbours in fields like education amongst others. Five inaugurations are also expected to take place, including that of the Mangdechhu hydroelectric power plant and the ISRO-built earth station in Thimphu.

India and Bhutan share a special and time-tested partnership, anchored in mutual understanding and respect and reinforced by a shared cultural heritage and strong people to people links.

“The visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries and provides an opportunity to the two sides to discuss ways to further strengthen and diversify the bilateral partnership, including economic and development co-operation, hydropower co-operation, people-to-people-ties as well as share views on regional matters and other issues of mutual interest,” an MEA statement said.

After wrapping up his bilateral engagements, Modi will depart for New Delhi from Paro on Sunday. (ANI)
