Swachh Bharat Abhiyan gathers steam in UP, all 652 local bodies declared open-defecation free

In the recent data released by the Central Government, all 652 Local bodies of the 75 districts in the state have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF). Ever since Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came into power, he laid emphasis on ensuring cleanliness and hygiene.

In an attempt to achieve open defecation free status for Uttar Pradesh, as many as 8,87,906 individual household toilets are built in the state.
So far, a total number of 2, 61,00,000 toilets have been built in the entire state under this scheme.

The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched in 2014 by the Union government. The mission aims to achieve the target of open defecation free across India. Also, a total of 62,818 community toilets and 652 pink toilets (only for women and girls) were built in the cities.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the country, has come a long way since the inception of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Work of door to door garbage collection in 11872 wards out of 12007 wards in municipal bodies was carried out from time-to-time.

In fact, the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri recently posted on Social Media about the achievement of Uttar Pradesh in getting the ODF status.

According to guidelines of the Swachh Bharat Mission of the Central Government, ODF is the termination of faecal-oral transmission, defined by number of visible faeces found in the locality/village, and every household as well as public/community institution using safe technology option for disposal of faeces.
