An accurate, noninvasive urine test for prostate cancer!
Washington D.C. [USA]: Researchers have made considerable advancement towards the development of a simple, noninvasive liquid biopsy test that detects prostate cancer from RNA and other specific metabolic chemicals in the urine.
The study was published in the journal of Scientific Reports.
The investigators at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have emphasised that this is a proof-of-principle study for the urine test, and it must be validated in additional, larger studies before it is ready for clinical use.
The researchers used RNA deep-sequencing and mass spectrometry to identify a previously unknown profile of RNAs and dietary byproducts, known as metabolites, among 126 patients and healthy, normal people.
The cohort included 64 patients with prostate cancer, 31 with benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis diseases, and 31 healthy people with none of these conditions.
RNA alone was not sufficient to positively identify cancer, but the addition of a group of disease-specific metabolites provided separation of cancer from other diseases and healthy people.
“A simple and noninvasive urine test for prostate cancer would be a significant step forward in diagnosis. Tissue biopsies are invasive and notoriously difficult because they often miss cancer cells, and existing tests, such as PSA (prostate-specific antigen) elevation, are not very helpful in identifying cancer,” said Ranjan Perera, PhD, the study’s senior author.
“We discovered cancer-specific changes in urinary RNAs and metabolites that — if confirmed in a larger, separate group of patients — will allow us to develop a urinary test for prostate cancer in the future,” said Bongyong Lee, PhD, the study’s first author and a senior scientist at the Cancer & Blood Disorders Institute. Melbourne [Australia]: Indian spinner Radha Yadav on Saturday registered her career-best bowling figures in T20I cricket.
She achieved the feat in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup match against Sri Lanka at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.
The 19-year-old spinner dismissed Chamari Athapaththu, Hansima Karunaratne, Hasini Perera and Anushka Sanjeewani. Her effort helped India restrict Sri Lanka to just 113/9 in the allotted twenty overs.
Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka was not able to create any sort of momentum and were reduced to 48/3 in the ninth over. Umesha Thimashini (2), Harshitha Madavi (12) and Chamari Athapaththu (33) did not stay at the crease for too long.
India capitalised on a strong start with the ball and Radha Yadav came into her own to reduce Sri Lanka to 80/7 in the 16th over.
Sri Lanka did not manage to score boundaries in the final overs and as a result, were restricted to under 120. (ANI)

May never be excited about a crowd again after going to India, says Donald Trump
South Carolina [US],: Addressing a rally in South Carolina, US President Donald Trump on Saturday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling him a ‘great guy’ who is loved by his countrymen.
Terming his recent visit to India “worthwhile”, Trump also quipped that he will never be excited again about crowds after having addressed over 1 lakh spectators in Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium earlier this week.
“I was with the Prime Minister of India, Modi. Great guy, loved by the people of India. And we had an amazing thing. And I went in, and here’s the problem. This is a big crowd. And normally I like talking about my crowds because I get the crowds like nobody, but I just got back from 140 or 50 or 60,000 people and now I’m coming here,” Trump said.
“I may never be excited again about a crowd after going to India. Think of this, they have 1.5 billion people. We have 350, so we’re doing pretty well, I’ll tell you what, but I love this crowd, and I love that crowd too. Tell you they have a great love for … They have a great love. They have a great leader, and they have a great love for the people of this country. That was really a worthwhile trip,” he added.
Donald Trump, accompanied by wife Melania and a high-level delegation, visited India earlier this week. During their 36-hour visit, Trump and the first lady attended various events and visited two cities – Ahmedabad and Agra – besides the national capital of India.
Upon their arrival at Ahmedabad airport on Monday, the US first couple was accorded a warm welcome by Prime Minister Modi and thousands of people who had lined up on the streets of the city.
Later, the US President addressed the ‘Namaste Trump’ event at Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium along with Modi, where both the leaders had hailed the growing ties between the two countries.
From Ahmedabad, the couple had flown to Agra in Uttar Pradesh to visit the Taj Mahal where the two, holding hands, took a stroll on the lawns. They also posed for a picture at the famed Diana’s bench.
In the last leg of their visit, Trump and Melania visited New Delhi. The US President received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday morning. Following this he sat down with Prime Minister Modi for delegation-level talks during which three agreements were finalised.
The couple wrapped up their visit by attending a banquet hosted by President Ram Nath Kovind. (ANI)

Shillong Violence: Death toll rises to 2 as migrant worker stabbed in busy Iewduh
A migrant worker was stabbed to death in the busy Iewduh (Bara Bazar) market on Saturday, taking the toll in clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups in Meghalaya to two, police said.
Seven persons were injured in the knife attack in the heart of the city and two of them suffered stab wounds, Superintendent of Police Claudia Lyngwa told PTI.
Those behind the attack are yet to be identified, she said.
In another mob attack, a migrant labourer was seriously injured after being thrashed at Sohra market in Sohra Civil Subdivision, the officer said, adding that he has been shifted to the Civil Hospital in Shillong for treatment.
The number of those injured in the clashes has gone up to 16, she said.
Clash between KSU and Non-Tribals
On Friday, a tribal was killed as clashes broke out between the Khasi Students’ Union members and non-tribals during a rally held in the Ichamati area of East Khasi Hills district close to the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The clashes during the rally, organised against the Citizenship Amendment Act and demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime, led to tensions in parts of the state, forcing the government to clamp curfew in two police station areas in Shillong, and mobile internet and SMS restrictions in six districts.
The curfew was eased during the day, even as mobile internet restrictions continued.
CM appeals for peace
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma reviewed the law and order situation in the state and appealed for peace.
“A magisterial inquiry has been set up. We have ensured that enough manpower is put in place in the affected areas,” the chief minister said.
He announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the family of the man killed in Friday’s clash.
Officials said that authorities are mulling imposing a night curfew in Shillong from 10 pm in view of the prevailing situation.
Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy has appealed to people to maintain and not pay attention to rumours.
“I appeal to all citizens in Meghalaya, tribal or non-tribal, keep calm. Don’t spread rumours and don’t listen to rumours. The chief minister has spoken to me. He assured me he is taking all necessary steps. The prime requirement now is to maintain law and order,” the governor said.

It hurts when someone badmouths Savarkar, confronted ‘big’ oppn leader once: Nitin Gadkari
Nagpur (Maharashtra): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said that he feels “extremely hurt” whenever someone criticises Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, and that he once confronted a “big” Opposition leader asking him to study Savarkar properly before denouncing him.
We are proud of Savarkar
Gadkari, who has practically grown up in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh shakhas, currently represents the Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency where the RSS headquarters is located.
“I feel extremely hurt when someone says something wrong about Savarkar. Savarkar and Shivaji Maharaj are revered by all of us. We are proud of Savarkar,” said Gadkari at a felicitation function of senior RSS worker Arvind Khandekar here.
“I once met a big political leader who had said something bad about Savarkar. I told him not to badmouth Savarkar and asked him to first study him and the RSS properly,” he said.
Sharing further about the meeting with the “leader”, Gadkari said: “He asked me, are you an RSS worker? I said yes. Then he replied “you are good” and I said if I am good then both the RSS and Savarkar are good. And if Savarkar and RSS are bad then I too am not good. I asked him to study first, then criticise.”
Dialogue with opponents
The senior BJP leader added that one should initiate dialogue with opponents and tell the truth to change their negative perceptions as well as hearts.
In December last year, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi kicked up a controversy when he said he would not apologise for his “rape in India” remark as his name was not “Rahul Savarkar”. Reacting to Gandhi’s statement, Savarkar’s grandson Ranjit said that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray should beat Gandhi publicly for ‘insulting’ his grandfather.

Eat less, live longer!
California [USA]: Eating less is the way to a healthier body and longer life, suggests a new study.
The study has been conducted by scientists from China and the USA and provides the most detailed report to date of the cellular effects of a calorie-restricted diet in rats. It was published in the journal – Cell.
While the benefits of caloric restriction have long been known, the new results show how this restriction can protect against ageing in cellular pathways, as detailed in Cell on February 27, 2020.
“We already knew that calorie restriction increases life span, but now we’ve shown all the changes that occur at a single-cell level to cause that,” said a researcher, Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte.
“This gives us targets that we may eventually be able to act on with drugs to treat ageing in humans,” Belmonte added.
Ageing is the highest risk factor for many human diseases, including cancer, dementia, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Caloric restriction has been shown in animal models to be one of the most effective interventions against these age-related diseases.
Although researchers know that individual cells undergo many changes as an organism age, they have not known how caloric restriction might influence these changes.
In the new paper, Belmonte and his collaborators–including three alumni of his Salk lab who are now professors running their own research programs in China–compared rats who ate 30 per cent fewer calories with rats on normal diets.
The animals’ diets were controlled from age 18 months through 27 months which would be an equivalent to someone following a calorie-restricted diet from age 50 through 70.
At both the start and the conclusion of the diet, Belmonte’s team isolated and analyzed a total of 168,703 cells from 40 cell types in the 56 rats. The cells came from fat tissues, liver, kidney, aorta, skin, bone marrow, brain and muscle.
In each isolated cell, the researchers used single-cell genetic-sequencing technology to measure the activity levels of genes. They also looked at the overall composition of cell types within any given tissue. Then, they compared old and young mice on each diet.
Many of the changes that occurred as rats on the normal diet grew older didn’t occur in rats on a restricted diet; even in old age, many of the tissues and cells of animals on the diet closely resembled those of young rats.
Overall, 57 per cent of the age-related changes in cell composition seen in the tissues of rats on a normal diet were not present in the rats on the calorie-restricted diet.
“This approach not only told us the effect of calorie restriction on these cell types but also provided the most complete and detailed study of what happens at a single-cell level during ageing,” said Guang-Hui Liu.
Some of the cells and genes most affected by the diet-related to immunity, inflammation and lipid metabolism.
The number of immune cells in nearly every tissue studied dramatically increased as control rats aged but were not affected by age in rats with restricted calories. In brown adipose tissue–one type of fat tissue–a calorie-restricted diet reverted the expression levels of many anti-inflammatory genes to those seen in young animals.
“The primary discovery in the current study is that the increase in the inflammatory response during ageing could be systematically repressed by caloric restriction,” said researcher Jing Qu.
When the researchers homed in on transcription factors–essentially master switches that can broadly alter the activity of many other genes–that were altered by caloric restriction, one stood out.
Levels of the transcription factor Ybx1 were altered by the diet in 23 different cell types. The scientists believe Ybx1 may be an age-related transcription factor and are planning more research into its effects.
“People say that ‘you are what you eat,’ and we’re finding that to be true in lots of ways,” said researcher Concepcion Rodriguez Esteban.
“The state of your cells as you age clearly depends on your interactions with your environment, which includes what and how much you eat,” Esteban said.
The team is now trying to utilise this information in an effort to discover ageing drug targets and implement strategies towards increasing life and healthspan. (ANI)

PM to launch 10,000 FPOs, lay foundation stone for Bundelkhand Expressway in UP today
Chitrakoot (Uttar Pradesh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch 10,000 Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs) all over the country in Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh here on Saturday.
Nearly 86 per cent of farmers are small and marginal with average land holdings in the country being less than 1.1 hectares.
These small, marginal and landless farmers face tremendous challenges during agriculture production phase such as for access to technology, quality seed, fertilizers and pesticides including requisite finances. FPOs help in the collectivisation of such small, marginal and landless farmers in order to give them the collective strength to deal with such issues, read a statement.
Members of the FPO will manage their activities together in the organization to get better access to technology, input, finance and market for faster enhancement of their income.
The event shall also witness the completion of one year of the launch of PM-KISAN scheme.
Launched on February 24 last year, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is an income support scheme for farmers to enable them to take care of expenses related to agriculture and allied activities as well as domestic needs. Under this, the benefit is provided to the eligible beneficiary to the tune of Rs.6000 per year. It is payable in three four-monthly instalments of Rs 2000 each. The payment is made online directly into the bank accounts of the eligible beneficiaries under Direct Benefit Transfer mode.
The Prime Minister will also be launching a saturation drive for distribution of Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) to all the beneficiaries under the PM-KISAN Scheme. Over 6.5 crore of the approximately 8.5 crore beneficiaries under PM-KISAN scheme possess the Kisan Credit Cards. The saturation drive shall ensure that the remaining about two crore PM-KISAN beneficiaries are also distributed the Kisan Credit Cards.
In Chitrakoot, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the Bundelkhand Expressway at Chitrakoot here today.
The 296-kilometre long Expressway will provide a four-lane access-controlled route in Uttar Pradesh.
The Expressway will be supplementing the nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor announced by the Government of India in February 2018.
The state government is constructing the Bundelkhand Expressway which will pass through the districts of Chitrakoot, Banda, Hamirpur and Jalaun. This expressway will link the Bundelkhand area to Delhi through Agra-Lucknow expressway and Yamuna expressway as well as play a vital role in the development of Bundelkhand region.
The 296 km long expressway is expected to benefit Chitrakoot, Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jaloun, Oraiyah and Etawah districts.
India has huge defence equipment requirements spanning from land systems, ships and submarines to fighter aircraft, helicopters, weapons and sensors. The requirements are worth over USD 250 billion by 2025. In order to fulfil these requirements, the government had announced setting up of Defence Industrial Corridor at Uttar Pradesh during the Investors Summit on February 21, 2018, in Lucknow.
The Central government has set up the Corridor with identification of six nodes initially. These are Lucknow, Jhansi, Chitrakoot, Aligarh, Kanpur, Agra out of which two nodes are being created in Bundelkhand region at- Jhansi and Chitrakoot. In fact, the biggest cluster would be created at Jhansi. The land which was not being cultivated has been purchased in both Jhansi and Chitrakoot. The poor farmers of the region have got benefitted from this.
Besides this, Prime Minister Modi will be distributing assistive aids and devices to senior citizens (under the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana-RVY) and ‘Divyangjans’ (under ADIP Scheme) at a distribution camp at Prayagraj.
“This is the biggest ever distribution camp being conducted in the country in terms of the number of beneficiaries covered, number of appliances distributed and value of aids and appliances distributed,” read a statement.
In the mega camp, over 56,000 assistive aid and devices of different types will be distributed free of cost to over 26,000 of beneficiaries. The cost of the aids and devices is over Rs 19 crore. The objective is to provide assistance through these aids and devices to the daily living and socio-economic development of the ‘Divyangjan’ and the senior citizens. (ANI)
