JDU slams Kejriwal over ‘outsider’ remark, says ‘CM drunk on power’
New Delhi: JDU on Monday slammed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his statement wherein he alleged that “people from outside” were landing up in the national capital to avail the free medical benefits for those living in Delhi.
The JDU termed his statement as “hateful” and said that the chief minister drunk on power has sacrificed human values.
A spokesperson for the party’s unit in Delhi, Satya Prakash Mishra, in a statement said, “Delhi Chief Minister has made an insulting remark against Bihar and the people from Bihar. His hateful remarks show that the Chief Minister, drunk on power, has sacrificed human values and forgot common people.”
The party termed Kejriwal’s statement as an evidence that he is scared of losing Legislative Elections in Delhi expected to take place early next year.
“Kejriwal is promoting hate politics in the national capital,” the spokesperson said claiming the Chief Minister is getting frustrated considering how JDU is growing by each Legislative election.
The JDU spokesperson also claimed that the High Court has rejected the contention of the Delhi government that only people of Delhi can get medical treatments in the city.
“Now why is Kejriwal saying that people of Bihar come to Delhi on Rs 500 ticket? Is he not aware that every countrymen have a right on the capital of the country and medical treatment is a responsibility towards humanitarian values,” he asked while adding that “the people will send him back on Rs 50 ticket this time.”
The party said it is not expecting an apology from the Chief Minister in this regard. “We do not expect an apology from him because he has a different name, “mafinama Mukhyamantri (apology seeking Chief Minister)”.
He is master in making mistakes and then seeking apologies,” the JDU spokesperson said while asserting that his party would fight against the insult to “Purvanchalis.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal while addressing an event recently had said, “The situation is such that a person from Bihar buys a ticket to Delhi for Rs 500 and returns after availing free treatment worth Rs 5 lakhs. It makes us happy as they are people of our own country, but Delhi has its own capacity.”
#WATCH Delhi CM: One person from Bihar buys a ticket to Delhi for Rs 500, returns after availing free treatment worth Rs 5 lakhs. JJP releases second list of candidates for Haryana Assembly polls
Chandigarh (Haryana): The Jananayak Janata Party (JJP) on Monday released the second list of its candidates for the ensuing Haryana Assembly elections to be held on October 21.
In the second list, the party has announced candidates for 15 seats including Faridabad, Kalka and Sirsa.
The party has fielded Bhag Singh (Kalka), Kusum Sherwal (Sadhaura), Mange Ram (Radaur), Prof Randhir Singh (Pehowa), Rajesh Dhull (Pundari), Bhim Singh Jallala (Nilokheri), Gurdev Ramba (lndri), Kuldeep Malik (Gohana), Rajender Ganeriwala (Sirsa), Sanjay Dalal (Bahadurgarh), Sanjay Kablana (Badli), Upender Kadyia (Beri), Moola Ram (Nangal Chaudhary), Taiyyab Hussain Ghasediya (Nuh) and Kuldeep Tewatia (Faridabad).
JJP is led by INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala’s grandson Dushyant Chautala.
On August 11, BSP and JJP had entered into a poll alliance but the same was later called off. On September 6, BSP chief Mayawati announced that her party will contest Haryana Assembly polls alone after snapping ties with Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) over “inappropriate” behaviour in seat-sharing agreement.
The JJP had contested the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) where it had to suffer a humiliating defeat being unable to secure even a single seat. JJP will contest on 50 seats and BSP will contest on 40 seats.
On Sunday, Tej Bahadur Yadav, the BSF constable who was dismissed from service after he had released a video in 2017 on quality of food served to soldiers, joined JJP in presence of party chief Chautala.
Haryana has the strength of 90 seats out of which 17 are reserved for SCs and none for STs. There are 1.82 crore registered voters in the state out of which 1.07 lakh are service voters.
The process of filing nominations for Haryana began on September 27.
The last date of filing nominations is October 4 and the scrutiny will take place on October 5. The candidates can withdraw their nomination till October 7.
The counting of votes will take place on October 24. (ANI)

PM Modi’s meet with Trump failed to meet India’s expectations: Congress
New Delhi: The Congress party on Sunday stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session has failed to meet India’s expectations.
“Congress Party notes with disappointment that the much-hyped meeting of Prime Minister Modi with US President Trump has failed to meet India’s expectations despite the public display of bonhomie and special friendship at the Huston ‘Howdy Modi’ extravaganza,” Congress leader Anand Sharma said in a statement.
Adding that there were no tangible outcomes of the visit which would justify the BJP celebration, Sharma said, “Prime Minister was unsuccessful in persuading US President Trump to restore the Generalized System of Preference (GSP) for Indian exports to US markets, withdrawal of reduction in number of H1-B visas for Indian professionals and steep hike in fee.”
“Failure to conclude the trade deal has caused disappointment in the Indian industry and exporters weighed down by the recession in our economy,” he said.
India and the US are strategic partners and the relationship is one of the special importance for both the countries, Sharma noted.
“It must embrace the core issues – political, economic and technological of India’s interests in strengthening a robust partnership,” he said.
The senior Congress leader further stated that Prime Minister Modi’s meetings with other heads of states and governments at the UNGA were a “routine affair and were part of standard practice at the UNGA.”
“They do not have a special significance as is claimed by the government-BJP propaganda. The BJP euphoria on PM’s visit is misplaced and there is no cause for celebration. Congress party will appreciate that the Prime Minister shares the government assessment of his visit with the leaders of the political parties,” he said.
“Prime Minister seems to be carried away by his own propaganda and disconnected with the harsh ground realities of deepening economic crisis, falling investments, crashing industrial production, loss of jobs and wages and collapsing demand and consumption,” he asserted.
Sharma stated that it is “high time that the government brings back focus on real issues and not deflect by engaging in boastful campaign propaganda.”
However, Sharma said that the Congress party is in “complete agreement with the stand taken by the Prime Minister and the government on Pakistan and the continuing threat of terrorism.”
“We congratulate the Prime Minister for reiterating India’s firm and consistent position that the state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and its accession is final and irrevocable. We endorse the official position that all issues pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir are India’s internal affairs and there is no question of any third-party meddling,” Sharma said.
While affirming that Congress Party condemns the “provocative and preposterous statement made by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the UNGA”, Sharma said that “it was aimed at misleading international opinion using falsehood and fabrication of facts to defame India. The language of Pakistan Prime Minister was unbecoming of a Prime Minister and has no place in any civilised discourse.” (ANI)

Innovation to transform landscape of banking and money: IMF
Washington DC: As privately issued stablecoins continue to encroach on more traditional forms of money — like cash and bank deposits — policymakers will not simply look on from the sidelines.
They will arbitrate, says the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“Their rules and actions will determine how we will eventually pay for everyday items like a cup of coffee and, more importantly, will affect the structure and risks of our financial sector,” said Tobias Adrian, Financial Counsellor and Director of the IMF’s Monetary and Capital Markets Department, and his colleague Tommaso Mancini-Griffoli who is the Deputy Division Chief.
Stablecoins are cryptographic tokens that can be easily exchanged, benefitting from minimal price volatility relative to cash. Consumers might quickly adopt these new, cheaper, faster and more user-friendly services integrated into their social media platforms.
However, these also come with notable risks that require prompt regulatory action. One possible regulatory path forward is to give stablecoin providers access to central bank reserves.
“This also offers a blueprint for how central banks could partner with the private sector to offer the digital cash of tomorrow — called synthetic central bank digital currency (sCBDC),” said Adrian and Mancini-Griffoli in a blogpost.
Whether stablecoins are indeed stable is questionable. Stablecoin providers must privately generate trust in their liabilities — the very coins they issue. Many do so by backing coins one-for-one with assets of the same denomination.
So if a stablecoin owner wanted to redeem her 10 euro coin for a 10 euro note, the stablecoin provider could sell the assets for cash to be paid out on the spot.
However, much depends on the safety and liquidity of the underlying assets, and on whether they fully back the coins in circulation. It also depends on whether assets are protected from other creditors if the stablecoin provider goes bankrupt.
Regulation must eliminate these risks. One option is to make it mandatory for the stablecoin providers to hold safe and liquid assets as well as sufficient equity to protect coin-holders from losses. In essence, the call would be to regulate stablecoin providers despite them not being traditional banks which will not be an easy task.
Another approach is to require stablecoin providers to fully back coins with central bank reserves — the safest and most liquid assets available.
If stablecoin providers held client assets at the central bank, clients will indirectly be able to hold and transact in central bank liabilities — the essence, after all, of a ‘central bank digital currency.’ In practice, the coins will remain the liability of private issuers and client assets will have to be protected against the bankruptcy of stablecoin provider.
The synthetic central bank digital currency — or sCBDC for short — offers significant advantages over its full-fledged cousin, which requires getting involved in many of the steps of the payments chain. This can be costly and risky for central banks as it will push them into the unfamiliar territory of brand management, app development, technology selection and customer interaction.
In the sCBDC model, which is a public-private partnership, central banks will focus on their core function: providing trust and efficiency. The private sector, as providers of stablecoins, will be left to satisfy the remaining steps under appropriate supervision and oversight, and to do what they do best: innovate and interact with customers.
Whether central banks jump on board at all is another matter. Each central bank will weigh the pros and cons related to payment system stability, financial inclusion and cost-efficiency. To the extent that central banks wish to offer a digital alternative to cash, they should consider sCBDC as a potentially attractive option.
Will sCBDC turn out to be the central-bank money of the future? “One thing is sure: the world of fiat money is in flux, and innovation will transform the landscape of banking and money. You can bet your bottom dollar on it,” said Adrian and Mancini-Griffoli in their blogpost. (ANI)

Navratri begins with great fervour, people throng temples on first day
New Delhi: The auspicious nine-day period of Navratri began on Saturday and devotees thronged temples to offer prayers and seek blessings of the almighty on the auspicious occasion.
Kalkaji temple and Jhandewalan temple in New Delhi were all decked up with flowers as people stood in long queues to attend the first aarti of the nine-day-long festival.
“I am feeling very happy. We have come here to seek blessings of the almighty. We have been standing in the queue for around two hours,” said one of the devotees in Kalkaji temple.
People were offered sweets (prasad) after watching the aarti.
Aarti was also performed and people were seen offering prayers even at Mumba Devi temple in Mumbai on the first day of Navratri.
This year, Navratri is being observed from September 29 to October 7.
Navratri in Sanskrit means nine nights in which nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped in a particular order. Alongside observing fast and performing various rituals, preparing a special offering for each day holds symbolic significance.
“Today it’s the first day of Navratri and we have come to see the aarti. Maa Jhandewali protects us and blesses us. It’s an auspicious day,” said another devotee who visited Jhandewalan temple.
Also known as Sharad Navratri, the tenth day of the festival is celebrated as Dussehra or Vijayadashami.
The occasion is believed to mark Goddess Durga’s victory over demon Mahishasura, which signifies the victory of good over evil.
The festival is popularly and prominently celebrated in Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Karnataka. (ANI)

After hours-long delay, Imran Khan departs for Pakistan on commercial aircraft
New York [US]: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday departed for Pakistan on a commercial aircraft, after a special jet given to him by the Saudi Arabian government, had developed a technical glitch minutes after taking off from New York airport.
Khan and his entourage left New York at around 2 pm (local time) and are enroute to Jeddah on a Saudi Airlines’ flight. The plane is expected to make a technical halt in Jeddah on Sunday at around 8:40 am, The Dawn reported.
After a brief stopover in Jeddah, Khan is expected to reach Pakistan on Sunday evening.
On Friday evening, Khan and his delegation had departed from New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport on the special jet given by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, during the prime minister’s visit to Saudi Arabia earlier this month.
However, the aircraft turned back and made an emergency landing at the New York airport after a technical glitch developed.
Pakistan’s envoy to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi, who had earlier seen off Khan, rushed back to the airport.
Khan and his entourage waited at the airport for some time as technicians were trying to fix the fault. However, the technicians said that glitch would be rectified by Saturday morning.
Lodhi, meanwhile, had escorted Khan back to the Roosevelt Hotel in the city, where he was staying during his week-long visit to the US for attending the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
Officials had remarked earlier that if the plane is not fixed by Saturday morning, Khan would take a commercial flight back to Pakistan.
On Friday, Khan had delivered his maiden speech at the UNGA, which exceeded the allotted time limit of around 15 to 20 minutes. In his over half-an-hour speech, Khan continued his anti-India rant over Kashmir, drumming up hysteria over a nuclear war with India.
Hitting back at Khan’s anti-India rhetoric address, India said the Pakistan Prime Minister’s threat of unleashing nuclear devastation qualifies as brinksmanship and not statesmanship. (ANI)

Imran Khan’s threat of nuclear devastation qualifies as brinkmanship, not statesmanship: India (Video)
India on Friday said that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s threat of unleashing nuclear devastation qualifies as “brinksmanship, not statesmanship”.
India’s right to reply comes after Khan in his maiden at the 74th UNGA session made an attempt to “sharpen differences and stir up hatred”.
Exercising India’s right to reply to Khan’s speech, First Secretary MEA Vidisha Maitra said that Pakistan’s “virulent reaction” over the abrogation of Article 370 depicts that “those who thrive on conflict never welcome the ray of peace”.
She said, “I take the floor to exercise India’s right of reply to the statement made by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Every word spoken from the podium of this august Assembly, it is believed, carries the weight of history.”
#WATCH Vidisha Maitra, First Secretary MEA exercises India’s right of reply to Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s speech says, “Can Pakistan PM confirm the fact it is home to 130 UN designated terrorists and 25 terrorist entities listed by the UN, as of today?” pic.twitter.com/vGFQH1MIql
— ANI (@ANI) September 28, 2019
“Unfortunately, what we heard today from Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan was a callous portrayal of the world in binary terms. Us vs Them; Rich vs Poor; North vs South; Developed Vs Developing; Muslims vs Others. A script that fosters divisiveness at the United Nations. Attempts to sharpen differences and stir up hatred are simply put – hate speech,” she continued.
While Pakistan representative was seen carefully taking notes, Maitra addressed Prime Minister with his full name, Imran Khan Niazi.
“Prime Minister Khan’s threat of unleashing nuclear devastation qualifies as brinkmanship, not statesmanship,” Maitra said.
“Pakistan’s virulent reaction to the removal of an outdated and temporary provision thatwas hindering development and integration of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir stems from the fact that those who thrive on conflict never welcome the ray of peace,” she added.
During his address, Khan warned of dire “consequences” in the event of a nuclear war with India over the Kashmir issue.
“If a conventional war starts between the two countries anything could happen. A country seven times smaller than its neighbour what will it do — either surrender or fight for its freedom,” he had said in his maiden address to the UN General Assembly here that exceeded beyond the allotted time limit of between 15 to 20 minutes.
“My belief is we will fight and when a nuclear-armed country fights till the end it will consequence far beyond the borders. I am warning you. It’s not a threat but worry about where are we heading. If this goes wrong you hope for the best but prepare for the worst,” Khan said.

Daughter fulfils last wish of Sushma Swaraj, says husband
New Delhi: In a heartfelt message, Swaraj Kaushal, the widower of Sushma Swaraj said that their daughter on Friday fulfilled the last wish of the veteran BJP leader.
Swaraj’s last wish was to give Rs 1 fee to senior advocate Harish Salve for contesting Kulbhushan Jadhav case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“Your daughter Bansuri has fulfilled your last wish today. She has presented Rs 1 fee to Harish Salve in Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case, which you had left,” read a message by the twitter handle Governor Swaraj.

— Governor Swaraj (@governorswaraj) September 27, 2019
A day before she died, Sushma talked to Salve and told him to come and take his fees of Rs 1 for the Jadhav case. However, just 10 minutes later, she suffered a cardiac arrest.
Salve gave credit for India’s success at the International Court of Justice in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case to Swaraj and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“It (Kulbhushan Jadhav case) was all her brainchild. There was not a single paper filed in the case which she didn’t see herself. She used to inspect everything and gave valuable suggestions. She used to go personally to the prime minister to ensure everything was cleared. The whole credit for the case goes to Prime Minister Modi and Sushma Ji,” Salve had said.
The seven-time parliamentarian Sushma Swaraj passed away at 67.

‘PM Modi won hands down’ at UNGA against Pak: Abhishek Singhvi
Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Friday evening.
Hailing PM Modi’s address at the UNGA he tweeted that there was no comparison between PM Modi’s speech and Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s speech at UNGA. He stated that Khan’s speech was petty, narrow, threatening and scared. In comparison, he stated that PM Modi did not mention Pakistan and spoke of India’s achievements, culture, and potential. He declared India and PM Modi won hands down.
PM Modi began his 15-minute address by referring to schemes implemented by his government and projects that would his administration plans to undertake.

WATCH: Activists hold protest against Pak brutalities in New York
Human rights activists on Tuesday organised a massive protest against the Pakistan Army in front of the United Nations General Assembly here on Friday (local time).
“Our demand is to end the human rights violations by the Pakistani military immediately. They should release the people who are still locked up in torture cells. But we are accused of terrorism if we raise our voices against them. There’s a dictatorship in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province by the Pakistani military establishment,” said Gulalai Ismail, a rights activist who was forced to flee Pakistan after being accused of treason.
She added, “Innocent Pashtuns were killed in Pakistan in the name of eradicating terrorism. Thousands of people are jailed in internment centres and torture cells of the Pakistani Army.”
Ismail is herself a victim of Islamabad’s brutal military crackdown on its minorities. The activist had travelled to Sri Lanka with a group of her friends last month and then fled to Brooklyn in New York where she is currently residing with her sister. Following her crusade against the atrocities committed on country’s women, she was slapped with treason charges. She has also applied for political asylum in the US. Lawyers said that there was little chance that the United States would send her back to Pakistan.
Ever since she was 16, Ismail has been speaking out about human rights abuses, focusing on the plight of Pakistani women and girls who suffer all kinds of horrors including forced marriages and honour killings.
Even though she has been able to escape to America, she is still worried about her parents and people who helped her during the days of hiding.
“Pakistan used all of its machinery to suppress my voice and hurt me. Cases were registered against my mother on the charges of terrorism to harass her, just because she is my mother,” she alleged further.
Meanwhile, Baloch activists also said, “Until Pakistan has its foot in our territory, Balochistan will never be at peace.”
Prior to Friday’s protests in New York, Nabi Bakhsh Baloch from US-based Baloch National Movement had also highlighted the poor plight of minorities in Pakistan before the UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva a few weeks ago.
“Imran Khan has himself acknowledged the fact that they have supported the Jihad and the Taliban. Now, we only want them to free our land. We want our freedom to be restored,” he said.

The Pakistan Prime Minister, who earlier today made his maiden appearance at the UN General Assembly, spoke for over half an hour, well over the allotted time-limit, where he touched upon issues like money laundering, climate change and Islamophobia, apart from raking up the Kashmir issue.
The cricketer-turned-politician used the global platform to continue his anti-India rhetoric, terming the RSS and BJP as “fascist” and “Hindu supremacist”. He warned of what he called “bloodbath” in Jammu and Kashmir ever since India abrogated Article 370 that granted special status in the region.
“Pakistan has been violating the UNSC Resolutions 47 that provided Pakistan 90 days time to step out of Gilgit-Baltistan. Pakistan has been ranting on Kashmir since a long time. But all of it is fake,” said Senge H Sering, a Director at the Institute of Gigit Baltistan Studies in Washington.

America’s first Sikh deputy sheriff fatally ‘shot’ in Houston
Washington DC: America’s first Sikh police officer on Friday (local time) was shot dead in northwest Harris County in Houston.
Sandeep Dhaliwal was a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and a father of three, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a press conference.
“He wore the turban, he represented his community with integrity, respect and pride and he was respected by all,” he added.
I’m sad to share with you that we’ve lost one of our own. Our @HCSOTexas was unable to recover from his injuries. There are no words to convey our sadness. Please keep his family and our agency in your prayers. #HouNews

Dhaliwal was conducting a traffic stop, the sheriff said. There were two people in the vehicle. As Dhaliwal was headed back to his patrol car, Gonzalez said a man got out of the vehicle with a pistol.
“In a cold-blooded manner, ambush style, (he) shot Deputy Dhaliwal from behind,” CNN quoted Gonzalez as saying.

Two people are currently in custody in connection with the shooting, the sheriff said, and a weapon was found that deputies believed was used to shoot Dhaliwal.
“It’s the worst day, the worst nightmare for any police executive,” Gonzalez said.
Community-led candlelight vigil was held tonight in honor of @HCSO_D5Patrol Deputy Dhaliwal. Please continue to keep his family & his @HCSOTexas family in your thoughts & prayers. Deputy Dhaliwal was LOVED by this community. #HouNews pic.twitter.com/oD7M78RXxm

“This guy had a heart of gold, he treated his brothers and sisters in law enforcement as if they were just brothers and sisters. He thought of them before he thought of himself. He thought of the broader community before he thought of himself,” said Adrian Garcia, Harris County police commissioner.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott, released a statement on Friday, saying “this tragic loss is a grave reminder of the risks that our law enforcement officers face every single day.”
“I thank the officers who bravely responded to apprehend the suspect, and I assure you that the state of Texas is committed to bringing this killer to justice,” Abbott said.

‘Great friend of India’: Kovind, Modi express grief over ex-French President Jacques Chirac’s demise
New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condoled the demise of former French president Jacques Chirac, who passed away at the age of 86, after a long illness.
Kovind described Chirac as a “great friend of India” and a “tall leader”.
“Saddened by the passing of Jacques Chirac, former President of France. A tall leader and a statesman, he was a great friend of India. My sincere condolences to the French people in this hour of grief #PresidentKovind,” Kovind’s tweet read in the President of India’s handle.

On the other hand, Modi said that Chirac played a decisive role in establishing and building a strategic partnership between the two countries.
“My deepest condolences on passing away of Jacques Chirac. India mourns the loss of a true global statesman. A friend of India, he played a decisive role in establishing and building India-France Strategic Partnership,” he said in a tweet.

Chirac had served as a head of state from 1995 to 2007. Prior to that, he was the mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995.
The 86-year-old former leader was most remembered for his defiant stand against the United States-led war in Iraq, and for shortening the presidential term from seven to five years in a referendum in 2000.
In recent years, Chirac had suffered from memory loss and was rarely seen in public. In years since the end of his political career, he was dogged by charges of corruption dating back to his time as the Paris mayor.
Chirac remained one of the most popular public figures in France. (ANI)

World’s tallest Ravana effigy will be burnt in Chandigarh
Chandigarh: In the wake of Dusshera festival, a Ravana effigy, 221 feet tall will be erected in Chandigarh.
The effigy is being built at the cost of Rs 30 Lakh.
“Our effigy will be the tallest in the world. We have been making the record from the last five years. Last year, the figurine was 210 feet tall, this time it is 11 feet taller so we are hoping to make a record again,” said one of the organisers.
The organizer said that the effigy weights over 70 quintals. “Ravan’s sword weighs three quintals, whereas the shoes are two quintals,” he added.
The effigy will be unveiled on October 2 at Dhanas ground.
“From October 3 to 7, various cultural programmes will take place at the venue here. On the evening of October 8, it will be set on fire,” said the organizer.
He added that the crackers used inside the Ravan effigy are pollution-free. “They will cause 80 per cent less pollution than normal crackers.” (ANI)

Why are fathers happier than mothers?
Washington D.C. [USA]: It is generally seen that dads are often happier, less tired and stressed as compared to moms when taking care of kids. But why is it so?
Researchers say these differences may come down to how and when childcare activities are split between parents.
In a study published in the Journal of Family Issues, researchers looked at childcare through the lens of a “care context.”
They went beyond measuring how much time mothers and fathers spend taking care of their children, and also looked at the type of childcare activity, when and where it took place, who took care, and how much care was involved.
Cadhla McDonnell, a doctoral candidate in sociology and demography at Penn State, said the results suggest that while fathers, in general, are much more involved in their children’s lives now than in the past, parenting is still highly gendered.
“A family trip to the playground is going to affect someone differently than changing diapers in the middle of the night, for example. In our study, we tried to capture those variations and see if they’re related to the differences we see between mothers’ and fathers’ moods,” the doctoral candidate added.
Researchers used data from the American Time Use Survey collected by the U.S. Census Bureau. Data included information about 4,486 childcare activities, as well as who performed the activity and that person’s corresponding mood.
Additionally, they analyzed each activity through the care context, which included five dimensions.
The first was “activity type,” and included physical (basic needs like eating and sleeping), recreational (like play and sports), educational (helping with homework or meeting with teachers), and managerial (planning doctor visits or transporting children).
Researchers found that fathers’ childcare activities were more likely to be recreational and take place on the weekend, while mothers’ activities were more likely to involve an infant and fit into the category of “solo parenting,” that is, parenting without a partner present.
Also, they found that taking the context of childcare activities into account fully explained differences in mother and father happiness, and partially explained differences in stress. It did not explain differences in tiredness.
It suggests that moms are generally more tired and stressed than dads and that they also are doing more childcare activities that tend to produce more stress and less happiness.
“Our findings show that some aspects of parenting are more enjoyable than others and that the way childcare is distributed between mothers and fathers right now brings more emotional rewards for dads than for moms,” McDonnell said.
Additionally, the researchers found that despite their differences, one thing that remained consistent between mothers and fathers was how meaningful they found childcare.
“Traditionally caregiving has been seen as more central to women’s identities than it is to men’s. But that’s not the case — mothers and fathers both found caring for children highly meaningful and there is no difference by gender,” McDonnell said. (ANI)
