CBDT to get details of Indians with Swiss accounts from today

New Delhi: Banking details of Indians with accounts in Switzerland will be available to tax authorities here from Sunday as the automatic exchange of information regime kicks off between the two countries. The move, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said, is a significant step in the government’s fight against black money and the era of “Swiss bank secrecy” will finally be over from September.

The CBDT frames policy for the Income-Tax Department.

Between August 29 and August 30, a Swiss delegation, led by deputy head of the tax division in the state secretariat for international finance Nicolas Mario Luscher, called on Revenue Secretary A B Pandey, CBDT Chairman P C Mody and CBDT Member (Legislation) Akhilesh Ranjan before the regime kicked in, it said.

The first automatic exchange of financial account information (AEOI) under the provisions common reporting standard will start from September.

“India will receive information of the calendar year 2018 in respect of all financial accounts held by Indian residents in Switzerland,” the CBDT said in a statement.

The information will include accounts that were closed during 2018.

During the meeting, both sides discussed bilateral exchange of information matters to expedite execution of tax information sharing requests made by India in specific cases, it said.

“Enhancing collaboration in offshore tax compliance matters was also discussed,” the CBDT said.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2019: Rules to abide by while placing Ganesha idol

New Delhi: Shri Ganapati or Gajavaktra is one of the most loved Hindu deities. Not only is he worshipped and admired by Hindus, but is equally honoured by Buddhists and Jains.

Being the patron of arts & science, remover of obstacles, keeper of wisdom, and lord of beginnings many people gift small idols of Ganesha to their loved ones, wishing for prosperity in their lives.

Risabh Jiwane’s mother also gifted him an idol of Vijaya Ganesha when he was leaving his home last year for higher education.

While Risabh, a 3rd-year student of IIT Delhi, knew that the sacred idol needs to be placed properly, he never paid attention to the details as to how.

“While giving me Bappa Murti, my mother said it is a special Ganesh idol and would surely bring success in your life. She reminded me that idols need to be properly placed for good luck and blessings. Though I have heard about the rules of Ganesh sthapana end number of times, it never occurred to me before living alone how exactly is it done,” he described.

Unlike Risabh, there are many who are unaware of the guidelines for placing the Ganapati Murti in order to strengthen the vibrations of bliss and success. So here are the important tips by Vastu Experts, Reecha Sharma and Chetan Sharma for placing your Ganapati murti!

Direction – Bappa’s idol shall be seated in the North East, North, or East direction and never in the South, South West or South-East part of the home or office area.

Placement – Put the Idol in such a way that the back of lord Ganesha faces the outside of the home. Make sure that the idol is not placed near the toilet or a wall adjoined with the washroom/toilet.

Also, if you live in Villa/Bungalow then avoid placement under the staircase at any cost.

Position – Ganpati statue should be in a sitting position so that God stays in your home. Whereas, for pandals, it could be in a standing position.

Trunk positioning – While placing the Ganesha in home ensure that the trunk of the idol is tilted left, as it is believed that deity with trunk tilted right is hard to please.

Other elements – The Gajavaktra’s idol shall be loaded with his favourite elements such as a mouse, known as his conveyance and laddoo/modak, his favourite sweet.

Murti size should be 9 inches or above. Wrapping the idol in yellow is recommended. Don’t forget to place a Kalash filled with water in front of Bappa. (ANI)

Watch: MQM founder Altaf Hussain sings ‘Sare Jahan se Accha’

New Delhi: The revocation of Article 370 is an internal matter India, said Altaf Hussain, the founder of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in an address in London on Saturday.

He also sang “Sare Jahan se Accha” during the address.

“Hussain said that the revocation of Article 370 by the Indian government was absolutely an internal matter of India and the government of India took this decision with the overwhelming support of the people of India,” a statement quoted the founder of MQM as saying.

The statement further quoted the leader, alleging that Pakistan’s civil and military establishments have been misleading the masses of its country over Kashmir for the last 72 years.

“Pakistan invaded Jammu and Kashmir and for that purpose used people of the tribal belt of Pakistan, arming them to attack and free J&K. Following this, the Maharaja of J&K approached India for help, consenting to merge the princely state with India. Pakistan fought four wars with India over the region but faced a humiliating defeat in all those four fights. Pakistan had not stopped conspiring against India and continued to infiltrate Indian territory with armed non-state actors in form of Jihadists,” he said.

“Pakistan misuses Kashmiris and drives them to a corner where they have no choice except to hoist Pakistani flag and chant slogans for making J&K party of Pakistan,” he added.

He also highlighted the plight of minorities in Pakistan during his address. “Pakistan’s military butchered unarmed and defenseless innocent Mohajirs, Balochs, Pashtuns, Sindhis, Hazarwalls, Gilgitis and other oppressed nations facing serious oppression in Pakistan,” Hussain stated.

The MQM leader also compared India and Pakistan.

“Hussain said that both the countries got freedom together but today, India has attained aggrandisation in all sectors from economy to technology. India attained this level because it had, soon after freedom, eliminated the decayed feudal system. Unfortunately, this decayed and corrupt feudal system is in full swing in Pakistan,” the statement quoted him as saying.

“There is no democracy in Pakistan but straight stratocracy which means the rule of the military by the Generals. Pakistan’s entire system has evolved in an entirely different style where the ISI is the most powerful institution of the country. Then comes the Chief of Army Staff — COAS — and then comes the poor Prime Minister. All institutions of the country including the civil, military establishment and judiciary work under the nose and as per the dictation of the ISI. Parliament, President, Prime Minister, and entire political and administrative set-up is nothing but a sheer rubber stamp under the control of the military and the ISI,” he claimed.

“The extension in service of General Qamar Javed Bajwa is unlawful, unconstitutional and against the established norms and values. On this, the people of the country have been duped again as a lame excuse has been made that since the country’s security was heavily jeopardised, so the decision made to extend his services for next three years. Are other Generals incapable of leading the army,” he asked, adding that it might happen that Bajwa’s successor could adopt a versatile policy of the J&K and could have convinced the world better.

India willing to discuss outstanding issues with Pak bilaterally: Jaishankar

Brussels [Belgium]: India is willing to discuss outstanding issues with Pakistan bilaterally in an atmosphere free of terror and violence, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday.

The remark was made during the minister’s meeting with European Union Commissioner Christos Stylianides after the latter reiterated the EU’s stance that New Delhi and Islamabad need to re-open dialogue through diplomatic channels for the de-escalation of tensions in the Kashmir region.

The two leaders further shared their expectations for better governance and greater development in the regions of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, as well as their perspectives on the recent developments pertaining to the situation in Afghanistan and Iran.

“A good meeting with EU Commissioner @StylianidesEU. Discussed our perspectives on Afghanistan and Iran. Spoke of our expectations for better governance and more development in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh,” Jaishankar wrote on Twitter.

“Underlined India’s openness to discuss other outstanding issues bilaterally with Pakistan in an atmosphere free of terror and violence,” he added.

Ever since Jammu and Kashmir was stripped of its special status, Islamabad has downgraded bilateral relations with New Delhi by suspending trade, partially closing its airspace, banning of screening Indian cinemas and halting Samjhauta and Thar Express train services. (ANI)

Google honours Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam with doodle

New Delhi: Google on Saturday honoured Amrita Pritam on her 100th birth anniversary with a cool doodle that references ‘Kala Gulab’ (Black Rose) the scintillating autobiography of the most prominent woman Punjabi author and poet.

The search engine called her history’s foremost female Punjabi writers, who “dared to live the life she imagines.”

Born in Gujranwala, British India, 100 years ago today, Pritam published her first collection of verse at age 16.

She is most remembered for “Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu,” her poem lamenting the traumatic 1947 partition of India and Pakistan. The work’s title translates as “I call upon Waris Shah today,” referring to the 18th-century Sufi poet Waris Shah.

Pritam published 28 novels including Pinjar, a dramatic tale set during the time of partition which was adapted into a movie later.

‘Kala Gulab’ (Black Rose), referenced in the Doodle art, reveals many details of her personal life, allowing other women to speak more openly about their experiences with love and marriage. The Doodle shows a woman, presumably Pritam dressed in a salwar suit seated cross-legged and writing.

“Known for her mastery of the Punjabi language, Pritam lived in Pakistan after Partition, but also wrote many works in Hindi and Urdu, as her work was admired on both sides of the border,” Google said.

Pritam who also worked for All-India Radio edited the literary journal Nagmani.

In 1986, she was nominated to Rajya Sabha.

Pritam died in the year 2005 and in her six-decade career, she received many prestigious awards including the Bharatiya Jnanpith in 1981 and the Padma Vibushan, in 2005.

That same year a French translation of her novel, The Skeleton, was awarded the La Route des Indes Literary Prize. (ANI)

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to visit Leh today

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be visiting Leh on Thursday to attend a programme being organised by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

“Leaving New Delhi for Leh, where I shall be attending a programme organised by @DRDO_India,” he said in a tweet in the morning.

This will be the first visit by the Defence Minister to Ladakh after the government abrogated Article 370 and passed a resolution bifurcating Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories earlier this month.

During the visit, Rajnath Singh is expected to hold parleys with both locals and military officials deployed in the area, defence officials had said.

Rajnath Singh to visit flood affected areas

In Leh, the Defence Minister is expected to be briefed by the local military commanders about the security situation on both China and Pakistan borders.

Rajnath’s visit comes amid China’s opposition to the move of making Ladakh a UT.

In June, Rajnath had visited Ladakh soon after assuming the post of Defence Minister and laid a wreath at the Siachen War memorial. (ANI)

Was expecting 2017-like long match with Okuhara, says World champion PV Sindhu

Hyderabad (Telangana): Shuttler PV Sindhu on Tuesday said that she was prepared for a 2017-like long match with Japanese player Nozomi Okuhara during the BWF World Championships and added that a dominating game led her to a historic win.

In an exclusive chat with ANI, Sindhu said that the central government was very supportive and is promoting every sport.

“Everyone was expecting a long match so I was prepared for everything because it’s more of like a long match with Japanese players. I was very focused and positive. Being positive and believing in myself helped me to keep me going,” she told ANI here.

Sindhu became the first Indian to win a World Championships gold medal by defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in the finals of the tournament on Sunday.

While Sindhu and Okuhara battled for 110 minutes during the 2017 World Championships final match, the duration of Sunday’s match was just 38 minute.

Talking about her strategy during the match, Sindhu said, “I was very dominating from the start and took a huge lead where I actually did not give her a chance or easy points to cope up with me and I finished it off that way.”

She said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju’s support to all forms of sports have been “fantastic”. “I met the Sports Minister and also PM Ji. They’ve been really very supportive. It’s really good that they’re doing a lot for sports,” she said.

Commenting on her biopic, she said that it will inspire a lot of youngsters and she was “really looking forward to it.” (ANI)

DDCA has taken right decision in renaming Feroz Shah Kotla after Arun Jaitley: Kiren Rijiju

New Delhi: The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju has said that Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) have taken the right decision of renaming the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as Arun Jaitley Stadium.

“Indian cricket and Delhi cricket have been closely associated with Arun Jaitley. As a sports minister, I would like to say that DDCA has taken the right decision by deciding to rename Feroz Shah Kotla to Arun Jaitley Stadium. I will go to the program which will be arranged and it will be the right tribute to Arun Jaitley,” Rijiju told ANI.

DDCA on Tuesday announced that the renaming of the stadium will be done on September 12.

The former Union Minister who passed away on August 24, was appointed as the chief of Delhi’s cricket body in 1999 and he held the post for 13 years.

Rijiju also met shuttler PV Sindhu on Tuesday as she returned after a winning stint at the BWF World Championships.

The Sports Ministry awarded Sindhu with Rs 10 lakhs as she became the first Indian to win gold at the championship.”We have felicitated everyone who have returned from the BWF World Championships. This was the first time, that we had the cheques ready before the players arrived in Delhi. I believe the government should help players in every way possible,” Rijiju said.

“PV Sindhu was also awarded 10 lakhs, Sai Praneeth was given four lakhs for winning a bronze medal in BWF World Championships,” he added.

Rijiju had also handed over cheques worth Rs 1.82 crores to para-badminton world championship winners.

The gold medal winners got Rs 20 lakh each while silver and bronze medallist took home Rs 14 lakh and Rs 8 lakh respectively. Winners in doubles events were given Rs 15 lakh each for gold, Rs 10.5 lakh each for silver and Rs 6 lakh each for bronze.

“Para-Athletes who have returned from badminton championships have also been awarded. Players winning gold have been awarded 20 lakhs, players who have won gold in the doubles event, have been awarded 15 lakhs each,” Rijiju said.

Important to focus on economic growth and structural reforms, says CEA Subramanian

Hyderabad (Telangana): Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) to the government of India KV Subramanian on Monday said that it is important to focus on economic growth and structural reforms.

“It is important to focus on economic growth and structural reforms. We are still the fastest growing economy in the world and we will continue to be in that position. The government continues to focus on investment,” the official said here.

He added that the government will take all the necessary steps for the growth of the economy.

“Investment first affects productivity and later affects exports and consumption. So it is important for us to focus on investment. In economy, there are multiple variables and investment is the key driver. That is something the government continues to focus on,” he said.

Further, he said: “Our export share is very low. The share is two per cent and that’s why we still have an enormous opportunity to grow. The exports cannot grow unless we emphasise on productivity.”

He also spoke about the trade war between the United States and China and said, “The recent news is about the United States and China sitting together (for a discussion). There may be a breakthrough that is coming possibly and it will be good news.” (ANI)

PM Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ to air today

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio broadcast “Mann Ki Baat” will be aired today at 11 am. This will be his third radio programme since he was re-elected for a second term in May.

The radio address can be heard live on All India Radio, DD National, DD News and DD Bharti.

In his first episode of “Mann Ki Baat” programme, after Lok Sabha elections, on June 30, Modi discussed various topics like emergency, water crisis and International Yoga Day. He had also urged people to inculcate a habit of reading books regularly.

He had said that he felt “empty” without addressing countrymen on the last Sunday of every month.

In the second episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ which was aired a week before the abrogation of Article 370, the Prime Minister had discussed Kashmir, saying that “those who spread hatred will never succeed in their nefarious plans”.

He had also asserted that the power of development was stronger than the might of “bullets and bombs”.

Modi had spoken in the last episode of the radio programme in February this year. He had expressed confidence of the BJP-led NDA’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections and said that the programme will return after the polls.

The programme is broadcast on the last Sunday of the month and suggestions, stories and ideas are invited from people for it. (ANI)

“From his residence, Jaitley’s body will be taken to the BJP headquarters for party workers and the public to pay their last respects. His final journey will begin from BJP headquarters to the Nigambodh Ghat, where last rites will be performed,” BJP working president JP Nadda had said.

He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to Jaitley’s family members and that the whole cadre of BJP was with them in this hour of grief.

Pondicherry Governor and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi remembers how Arun Jaitley motivated her to take up electoral politics.

President Ram Nath Kovind had paid tributes to the former finance minister Jaitley at the latter’s residence.

Kejriwal expresses concern over reports of ‘economic recession’

New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday expressed “grave concern” over reports of an economic slowdown in the country and said that his government will cooperate with the Centre to deal with the issue.

“Reports in the media of economic recession is a matter of grave concern. I have absolute faith that the central government will take strict measures on it. Whatever steps are taken by the Centre, Delhi government will cooperate to overcome the recession,” he told media here.

Kejriwal’s comments came after several leaders in the industry expressed concern over the slumping demand of goods, particularly in the automobile sector.

In a bid to boost the economy, the government on Friday announced a slew of measures including the rollback of a controversial tax surcharge on foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and equities of domestic investors.

Conflict of interest rule has to be practical, says Sourav Ganguly

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], Aug 24 (ANI): Weeks after Committee of Administrators (CoA) made it clear that there was no “Conflict of Interest” in former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid’s appointment as National Cricket Academy’s (NCA) head, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly on Friday slammed the conflict of interest rule saying it “has to be practical.”

Ganguly gave Rahul Dravid’s example who was appointed as the National Cricket Academy’s head last month. There have been questions raised on his appointment as he also holds the position of vice-president of India Cements group which owns Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings. However, Ravi Thodge, member of Committee of Administrators (CoA), said that there was no conflict of interest in Dravid’s appointment as NCA’s head.

“The rule has to be practical. Rahul Dravid has been appointed as the NCA head and there are issues about conflict of interest with his job with India Cements. Three years later you may not remain the NCA head but these jobs are permanent and remain with you. I don’t see it as a conflict of interest. You go around the world and look at Ricky Ponting,” Ganguly said during an event.

Ganguly also gave the former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting’s example as he coaches Australian team and is also involved in commentating, in addition to this, he is part of the coaching staff of the IPL side Delhi Capitals.

The 47-year-old congratulated Ravi Shashtri for an extension as the head coach of the Indian team and hoped that the team will do better in the coming years. India lost to New Zealand in the semi-final of the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

“Ravi has been around for a while, he has completed 5 years. He has got an extension for 2 more years. So, I wish him luck and hopefully, India can go all the way in the two major tournaments that are coming in the next two years,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly also commented on the Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s decision of not picking Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Ashwin in the playing eleven of the first Test against West Indies.

“I was surprised to see Kuldeep Yadav left out because the last Test he played against Australia he got five wickets in Sydney. But Jadeja also had been in good form. The surface at the Antigua needed three fast bowlers for sure. It was the question of the spin. Ashwin’s record is phenomenal to leave him out in the Test matches. It’s a decision Kohli has made and we will find out in next couple of days how far does Jadeja goes on to pick wicket on this surface,” said Ganguly. (ANI)

President Kovind, PM Modi extend Janmashtami greetings to nation

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday greeted the nation on the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna.

Taking to his twitter handle, President Kovind wished people a joyous day full of festivities and celebrations.

“Greetings and good wishes to fellow citizens on Janmashtami. As we reflect upon the timeless teachings of Lord Krishna, may this be a joyous day full of festivities and celebrations for all of us,” the President tweeted.

Prime Minister Modi also wished for everyone’s good health and happiness on the joyous occasion.

“Janmashtami greetings to everyone! May the blessings of Bhagwan Shri Krishna always bring happiness and good health in our lives. Jai Shri Krishna!”, the Prime Minister tweeted.

As per the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra. The day mostly falls in the months of August or September as per the Western calendar.

The festival is celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Krishna. An idol of infant Krishna over a beautifully decorated swing is often the centre of festivities with dance and music performances and Dahi Handi competition being organised at different places.

In Mathura, which is considered to be the birthplace or ‘Janmabhoomi’ of Lord Krishna, devotees thronged temples in large numbers on Saturday to offer prayers on the auspicious occasion. (ANI)

CBI arrests Chidambaram in INX Media case amid dramatic scenes

New Delhi: Amidst dramatic scenes, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram was arrested in the INX Media case on Wednesday night after he failed to get relief from the Supreme Court over CBI and ED’s pursuit of him as the matter was not heard by the court despite repeated efforts of his lawyers.

After his arrest by the CBI from his Jor Bagh his residence, Chidambaram, 73, was taken to headquarters of the probe agency. He is likely to be produced before a CBI court at the Rouse Avenue on Thursday.

Earlier, the former Finance Minister made a dramatic appearance at the Congress headquarters here and addressed a press conference in which he rejected the charges against him and his son in the INX Media case and said “lies” were being spread by “pathological liars.”

He then left for his Jor Bagh residence from the Congress office and teams of the CBI and the ED reached soon after.

He was arrested in the glare of media after over an hour-long drama during which some officials scaled the gates to gain entry to his house. Supporters of the former Finance Minister raised slogans and tried to stop officials from taking him away. Some of them also blocked the road in protest.

Two of them climbed on the car in which Chidambaram was being taken and had to be brought down. An official took to scooter to move away from reporters chasing him for information. CBI and ED had issued a lookout circular against him.

After his arrest, Chidambaram’s pre-arrest bail plea in the Supreme Court has become infructuous.

CBI sources said that Chidambaram was arrested on an arrest warrant issued by a competent court.

Earlier in the day, Chidambaram’s Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking a pre-arrest bail was not cleared by the Supreme Court registry as it had certain defects.

A bench headed by senior-most judge Justice N V Ramana referred the plea back to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

The CJI, however, had commenced hearing in the Ayodhya dispute case due to which Chidambaram’s counsel Kapil Sibal was unable to mention the matter before him for urgent hearing.

The CBI and ED filed caveats in the Supreme Court over Chidambaram’s plea seeking protection from arrest in the INX media case.

Congress party rallied behind Chidambaram with party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi expressing their full support to him. DMK leader M K Stalin also came out in his support.

At the press conference, Chidambaram was flanked by senior party leaders Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge, Salman Khurshid, Vivek Tankha and KC Venugopal.

The Congress message for the press conference did not say that Chidambaram will be present.

Rejecting the charges against him and his son Karti in the INX Media case, Chidambaram said FIR does not impute any wrongdoing by him and there was no chargesheet either by the CBI or ED before the competent authority.

Reading from a prepared statement, Chidambaram dismissed suggestions that he was hiding from the law.

Chidambaram said he will respect the law even if applied “with an unequal hand by the investigating agencies” and hoped the investigative agencies will also respect the law.

“In the name of freedom, I can only hope and pray that investigating agencies will also respect the law in the present circumstances and wait for the decision of SC on Friday,” he said.

He said the whole of last night and today he was working with his lawyers and preparing the petition.

“In the last 24 hours, much has happened that has caused concern to some and confusion to many. My statement today is to dispel that concern. In the INX Media case, I have not been accused of any offence nor is anyone else including any member of my family accused of any offence,” he said.

“In fact, there is no charge sheet filed by the CBI or the ED before the competent court. Moreover, the FIR recorded by the CBI does not impute to me any wrongdoing yet there is a widespread impression that grave offences have been committed and I and my son have committed that offence. Nothing can be further from the truth. These are lies spread by pathological liars,” he said.

He said despite impatient pleas of his lawyers, the cases “were not listed for hearing today, neither they will be listed tomorrow but will be listed on Friday.”

“I bow down to the orders of the Supreme Court. Between now and Friday I shall work with the clear conscious and my head held high. I shall respect the law even if it is applied with an unequal hand by the investigating agencies,” he said.

The Congress leader, who is a Rajya Sabha MP, said he was aghast that he was accused of hiding from the law.

“On the contrary, I was seeking the protection of the law. I was accused of running away from justice. On the contrary, I was engaged in the pursuit of justice,” he said.

“Some days ago when I spoke in Parliament, I had said that every judge in the country will uphold the liberty of the citizen. I had said that the collective conscience and the institutional memory of the court as a venerable institution will guide all judges of the country. As much as I believe in liberty, I also believe in the wisdom of our judges,” he said.

“So until Friday and beyond, let us hope that the lamp of liberty will shine bright and illuminate the whole country,” he said.

Chidambaram said when he was summoned by the CBI and then the Enforcement Directorate to appear for questioning, he sought interim protection against arrest and was granted interim protection by the high court.

“I have enjoyed it for the last 13 to 15 months. The matter was finally heard on January 25 and the judgment reserved. After seven months, the high court was pleased to dismiss my pre-arrest bail application. My lawyers advised me to move the Supreme Court. On my behalf, they did so yesterday evening and today. They appealed to Supreme Court to list it urgently and meanwhile grant me interim protection,” he said.

“While senior counsel was moving the Supreme Court, I worked with my lawyers through the night last night to prepare the papers. Today throughout the day I was with my lawyers following the proceedings in the Supreme Court,” he said.

Chidambaram said the most precious Article of the Constitution of India is Article 21 that guarantees life and liberty.

“If I was asked to choose between life and liberty, I should unhesitatingly choose liberty. Why are years up to 1947 called the years of freedom struggle because to win the freedom we must struggle, to preserve the freedom we must struggle,” he said.

Rahul accused the Modi government of using the ED, CBI and “sections of a spineless media to character assassinate” Chidambaram and said he strongly condemns “this disgraceful misuse of power.”

Priyanka Gandhi alleged that the Congress leader was “shamefully hunted down” and vowed to “stand by him and continue to fight for the truth”.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, however, dismissed the Congress allegations and said BJP had no involvement in the issue.

The Congress leader’s lawyers had moved the apex court against Tuesday’s Delhi High Court order dismissing his anticipatory bail plea regarding cases filed by the CBI and the ED related to the alleged INX Media scam.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the plea of Chidambaram and said this is a case of money laundering of monumental magnitude.

The Delhi High Court had, in its order, said that the grant of bail in cases like this will send a wrong message to the society.

Chidambaram, in his petition, said that he granted approval to INX Media’s proposal in the “normal course of official business.”

The Congress leader said that the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), which was constituted in order to promote foreign investment in the country, unanimously approved the proposal of INX Media for approval for FDI.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered an FIR alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister.

Based on the FIR, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case against him.

Chidambaram’s son Karti has also been named in the two cases. He was arrested on February 28, 2018, by the CBI and was later released on bail. The ED had attached properties belonging to him.

On July 4, a Delhi court had allowed Indrani Mukerjee, the former head of the INX Media, to turn an approver in the CBI case.

The CBI had on late Tuesday night put up a notice outside his residence to appear before them in two hours prompting his lawyer to request the investigation agency not to take any coercive action until the hearing of Chidambaram’s plea in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. (ANI)

Sreesanth thanks Supreme Court, BCCI after his ban reduced to seven years

Kochi (Kerala): Indian fast bowler S Sreesanth on Tuesday thanked the Supreme Court and the BCCI after his life ban was reduced to seven years by the ombudsman DK Jain.

“God has been extremely kind, thank you very much for all the support. It was a struggling phase but I have ruled that phase. Thank you very much whoever supported me or did not support me. Thanks to the BCCI, thanks to the Supreme Court, and Ombudsman DK Jain, for giving me an opportunity from next year,” Sreesanth told reporters.

The 36-year-old said that the coming year will be used in a timely manner to fulfill some of the commitments made in the film industry and make a proper return to cricket.

“I need to get in the match fitness and my focus will be on the game. In the end last six years, I survived because of the entertainment industry. I have certain commitments, which I have to finish,” Sreesanth said.

“It is great news for me. Now, I have a proper road map to follow. I will not disappoint any of those people who supported me, especially from Kerala. I’ll make sure that I train really hard and make a comeback,” he added.

Earlier, the BCCI’s ombudsman Justice (Retd) DK Jain issued the order on August 7 but made the announcement on Tuesday that Sreesanth’s ban will end on September 13 next year.

“I am of the view that banning Sreesanth from participating in any kind of commercial cricket or from associating with any activities of the BCCI or its affiliates, for a period of seven years with effect from 13.09.2013, i.e., the date from which, the period of ban imposed by the Disciplinary Committee had commenced, will meet the ends of justice,” Jain said in an order that was issued on August 7.

Sreesanth was banned by the BCCI for a lifetime in August 2013 along with his Rajasthan Royals teammates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan for indulging in alleged spot-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) that year.

sreesanth has changed beyond recognition

Upon investigation, the 36-year-old was found guilty by the BCCI and the board had imposed a life ban on the cricketer, which was later challenged by Sreesanth in Kerala High Court which upheld the life ban. Sreesanth then moved to the apex court, pleading that the High Court verdict to be set aside.

On March 15, the Supreme Court set aside the life ban imposed on Sreesanth by the BCCI and asked the cricket body to reconsider his plea within three months. (ANI)
