World Breastfeeding Week: To choose breast feeding or pumping?
New Delhi: A mother’s breast milk supports immune responses in her newborn till six months, further decreasing the risk of infections, malnourishment, allergies, and other complications.
However, one of the key challenges in this aspect is that lactating mothers often don’t get ample maternity leave. Therefore, they push themselves to store breast milk and feed it to the child later.
Breast pumps are quickly gaining admiration in this regard. In fact, Khushboo Mehra, a working mother of 8-month old Adya, opted to go for breast pumping instead of breastfeeding as she had time shortage and was suffering from breast infection.
“Breast pumping is the best thing ever because it gives you the freedom to do your job and have a life. I was sceptical of trying breast pump at first as I had skin infection around my breast area but once I started using it with my gynaecologist suggestion I realised there is no such danger that comes with breast pumping. In fact, the process is really easy,” said Khushboo.
To make this cumbersome process easier and safe, lactating mothers must keep a few points on their fingertips.
“The breast pumps need to be sterile and breast pumping should be a ‘zero contact’ process, i.e. any part of the pump that comes in contact with the breast milk should be away from any human touch”, recommended Dr.Ranjana Becon Consultant gynaecologist, Columbia Asia Ghaziabad.
On the other hand, there are also a few who feel breast pumping isn’t a secure option and make those mothers feel stigmatised who choose breast pumping. Also, some believe breastfeeding is suitable as it adds up to the health of the newborn.
Mukta Devi, the grandmother of 14-months old Satvik, consider breast pumping isn’t safe and exclude bonding time among child and mother. She also believes breastfeeding has many benefits, which keep the baby and the mother in fine fettle.
“All these new products cannot be compared to breastfeeding your baby directly. Not only does the process have health significance but breastfeeding brings the mother and the newborn baby emotionally close. Motherhood is one of its kind experience, no one shall skip the process and use any new age item to feed the baby,” said Mukta Devi.
Further explaining the benefits of breastfeeding, gynaecologist and obstetrician from Paras Hospital, Dr Alka Kriplani said, “Breastfeeding helps to reduce the chances of breast cancer in a woman. Children, who are breastfed, for a longer period of time, have the lower chances of infection and a higher intelligence level.”
Another expert added “No additional financial costs are required for breastfeeding. It is very convenient as there is no need to find clean water, heat formula or pack bottles. The more your baby is breastfed, the more milk will be produced ensuring that the baby has enough milk,” said Dr Anibha Pandey, Pediatrician, Apollo Cradle.
However, breastfeeding is not easy. During breastfeeding, a woman has to go through cracked, sore, and even infected nipples. But what about children who can’t be breastfed due to various reasons? For such children manual pump or electric pump is like a boon through which they can also consume mother’s nourishing milk.
Therefore, there is no right choice between breastfeeding and breast pumping. Breastfeeding directly is the most hygienic, sterile and best for the baby. Whereas, pumped milk is the easiest yet a hassle-free option in a case where the mother finds herself incapable of feeding her newborn. It’s all about the new mother’s convenience. (ANI)

Trump vows ‘substantial reciprocal action’ on France over taxing US tech giants
Washington D.C: United States President Donald Trump on Friday vowed to take “substantial reciprocal action” against France after President Emmanuel Macron signed into law a tax targeting technology giants like Amazon and Google.
“France just put a digital tax on our great American technology companies. If anybody taxes them, it should be their home Country, the USA. We will announce a substantial reciprocal action on Macron’s foolishness shortly. I’ve always said American wine is better than French wine!” the president wrote on Twitter.
France just put a digital tax on our great American technology companies. If anybody taxes them, it should be their home Country, the USA. We will announce a substantial reciprocal action on Macron’s foolishness shortly. I’ve always said American wine is better than French wine!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2019
Macron this week signed the digital services tax, which imposes a three per cent tax on the annual revenues of technology companies that make at least 750 million euros annually and provide services to users in the country, The Hill reported.
The tax would affect several companies, including U.S.-based tech giants like Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon.
“The United States is extremely disappointed by France’s decision to adopt a digital services tax at the expense of US companies and workers,” White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in a statement.
“The Trump Administration has consistently stated that it will not sit idly by and tolerate discrimination against US-based firms,” he added.
The president further stressed that his administration would deny a request by Apple to avoid stiff tariffs that he had similarly put on Chinese imports.
Trump has increasingly used tariffs to extract concessions over a range of issues, including those unrelated to trade practices. In June, he threatened to tax all Mexican imports to resolve an immigration dispute.
He tweeted on Friday morning that Apple “will not be given Tariff waiver, or relief, for Mac Pro parts that are made in China” and that the company should “Make them in the USA, no Tariffs!” (ANI)

We salute grit, valour of those who defended India: President on Kargil Vijay Diwas
President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday hailed the “grit and valour of those who defended India” on the 20th anniversary of India’s triumph in the Kargil war.
“On Kargil Vijay Diwas, a grateful nation acknowledges the gallantry of our Armed Forces on the heights of Kargil in 1999. We salute the grit and valour of those who defended India, and record our everlasting debt to those who never returned. Jai Hind,” President Kovind tweeted.
Later in the day, the President will visit the war memorial in Jammu and Kashmir’s Drass to pay tributes to soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1999 conflict.
The war memorial has around 500 tombstones with the name of soldiers inscribed in them.
The Indian armed forces had defeated Pakistan on July 26, 1999. Since then, the day is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Indian Army is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Kargil War today to rekindle the pride and valour of the soldiers who took part in Operation Vijay.

PM Modi should break his silence on US president’s claims: Congress
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to mediate on “Kashmir issue”, has stoked a controversy in the Indian political quarters, with opposition parties asking Modi to clarify his stance and ‘break silence’ on the matter.
“Deeply disturbing & distressing is the @POTUS claim that PM Modi made a request to him for mediation on Kashmir! No Indian PM has ever dared to breach the cardinal principle of ‘no third party mediation’ in terms of 1972 Simla Agreement. Why is PM mum?” tweeted Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress spokesperson.

“I honestly don’t think Trump has the slightest idea of what he’s talking about. That said, MEA should clarify that Delhi has never sought his intercession,” tweeted senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.
On the other hand, hours after US President Donald Trump said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked him to help resolve the Kashmir issue, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) India clarified that no such request has been made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US President.

ISRO successfully completes launch rehearsal of Chandrayaan-2
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully completed the launch rehearsal of the Chandrayaan-2 mission on Saturday. The Mission is slated to launch on July 22.
“Launch rehearsal of #GSLVMkIII-M1 / #Chandrayaan2 mission completed, performance normal #ISRO,” tweeted ISRO.

— ISRO (@isro) July 20, 2019
Chandrayaan-2 was scheduled to be launched on July 15. However, less than an hour before the launch, the mission was aborted after a technical snag was detected in the rocket.
Chandrayaan-2, which has home-grown technology, will explore a region of Moon where no mission has ever set foot. The spacecraft consists of an orbiter, a lander and a rover together referred to as “composite body”. The probe’s total mass is 3.8 ton and it is expected to land on Moon’s South Polar Region on September 6 or 7 this year.
It will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. This mission will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia and China to carry out a soft landing on Moon. (ANI)

Haridwar: Jal Police, SDRF teams deploy to rescue kanwariyas from drowning
Haridwar: Amid the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, Jal Police and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams have been deployed to rescue kanwariyas from drowning near River Ganga in Haridwar, police officials said.
So far six kanwariyas have been rescued by the teams.
“We have marked points where teams of ‘Jal Police’ and SDRF have been deployed to monitor ‘kanwariyas’. So far six ‘kanwariyas’ have been rescued. We have also put up caution boards,” Haridwar SP Janmejay Khanduri said.
The Kanwar Yatra began on the occasion of Shravan Purnima on July 17 and will continue till August 15. Keeping in view the safety of children and for maintaining law and order, Uttarakhand government had announced that all the educational institutions, including schools and colleges in the district, would remain closed from July 23 to July 30.
The order was issued keeping in view the increasing number of devotees visiting Haridwar and the possibility of the closure of the roads for the movement.
The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of Lord Shiva’s devotees. The Kanwariyas (pilgrims) visit Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of River Ganga. Later, the holy water is used to dispense as offerings to Lord Siva. (ANI)

Pratap Bhanu Mehta resigns as Ashoka University VC to focus on academics
Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka University has resigned from his post citing return to full-time academic life as the reason behind his resignation. However, he announced that he would step down from his post with effect from August 1.
In a communication to the varsity community, Bhanu said: “I write to announce that I will be stepping down as Vice-Chancellor, Ashoka University, effective August 1st, 2019. The Chancellor has kindly accepted my resignation.”
“Being Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka has been an extraordinary privilege. But after much deliberation, I decided that I need to return to more full-time academic life. I will continue to be associated with Ashoka University. I will continue to teach, learn, write and enjoy the intellectual richness of this wonderful university, and help it in any way I can,” said Pratap Bhanu Mehta.
Further, he said that he had increasingly begun to feel the tension between his vocation as an academic and his obligation as an administrator.
“I was lucky enough to have the full support of the university in all my endeavours, including my writing. But I had increasingly begun to feel the tension between my vocation as an academic and my obligations as an administrator. The practical challenges and responsibilities that come with running a university left me without enough space for my writing and other academic interests. I had lots of freedom but little time. It was time to give academic life one more shot before my synapses irrevocably hardened,” he stated.
“I wanted to carve out a space to engage with the practical and theoretical challenges of our time and return to various unfinished projects. The contemporary world has unsettled so many of our political and philosophical assumptions, and I increasingly felt the need to reorient myself academically. Hence, the decision to step down,” said Mehta.
“The timing of my stepping down as VC may occasion speculation. But I thought it would be best to leave before the new academic year began, rather than cause disruption during the year,” he said (ANI).
