World Breastfeeding Week: To choose breast feeding or pumping?

New Delhi: A mother’s breast milk supports immune responses in her newborn till six months, further decreasing the risk of infections, malnourishment, allergies, and other complications.

However, one of the key challenges in this aspect is that lactating mothers often don’t get ample maternity leave. Therefore, they push themselves to store breast milk and feed it to the child later.

Breast pumps are quickly gaining admiration in this regard. In fact, Khushboo Mehra, a working mother of 8-month old Adya, opted to go for breast pumping instead of breastfeeding as she had time shortage and was suffering from breast infection.

“Breast pumping is the best thing ever because it gives you the freedom to do your job and have a life. I was sceptical of trying breast pump at first as I had skin infection around my breast area but once I started using it with my gynaecologist suggestion I realised there is no such danger that comes with breast pumping. In fact, the process is really easy,” said Khushboo.

To make this cumbersome process easier and safe, lactating mothers must keep a few points on their fingertips.

“The breast pumps need to be sterile and breast pumping should be a ‘zero contact’ process, i.e. any part of the pump that comes in contact with the breast milk should be away from any human touch”, recommended Dr.Ranjana Becon Consultant gynaecologist, Columbia Asia Ghaziabad.

On the other hand, there are also a few who feel breast pumping isn’t a secure option and make those mothers feel stigmatised who choose breast pumping. Also, some believe breastfeeding is suitable as it adds up to the health of the newborn.

Mukta Devi, the grandmother of 14-months old Satvik, consider breast pumping isn’t safe and exclude bonding time among child and mother. She also believes breastfeeding has many benefits, which keep the baby and the mother in fine fettle.

“All these new products cannot be compared to breastfeeding your baby directly. Not only does the process have health significance but breastfeeding brings the mother and the newborn baby emotionally close. Motherhood is one of its kind experience, no one shall skip the process and use any new age item to feed the baby,” said Mukta Devi.

Further explaining the benefits of breastfeeding, gynaecologist and obstetrician from Paras Hospital, Dr Alka Kriplani said, “Breastfeeding helps to reduce the chances of breast cancer in a woman. Children, who are breastfed, for a longer period of time, have the lower chances of infection and a higher intelligence level.”

Another expert added “No additional financial costs are required for breastfeeding. It is very convenient as there is no need to find clean water, heat formula or pack bottles. The more your baby is breastfed, the more milk will be produced ensuring that the baby has enough milk,” said Dr Anibha Pandey, Pediatrician, Apollo Cradle.

However, breastfeeding is not easy. During breastfeeding, a woman has to go through cracked, sore, and even infected nipples. But what about children who can’t be breastfed due to various reasons? For such children manual pump or electric pump is like a boon through which they can also consume mother’s nourishing milk.

Therefore, there is no right choice between breastfeeding and breast pumping. Breastfeeding directly is the most hygienic, sterile and best for the baby. Whereas, pumped milk is the easiest yet a hassle-free option in a case where the mother finds herself incapable of feeding her newborn. It’s all about the new mother’s convenience. (ANI)

President Kovind departs on 3-country visit to Africa

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind departed for an official seven-day visit to the African countries of Benin, The Gambia and Guinea on Sunday here.

“This is his first state visits in the third year of his Presidency. This is the first-ever state visit of a President of India to any of the three countries,” the President of India tweeted.

This is his fourth visit to the African continent.

“The visit of the President will further deepen India’s relations with African nations. This is also the first standalone visit of the President of India to West Africa,” the official account further said.

“The President will hold delegation-level talks with the leadership of the host countries to strengthen ties in keys sectors such as trade, investment and energy. He will address the National Assembly of Guinea and The Gambia and will interact with the Indian community,” it added.

This will be the highest-level visit from India ever to the three West African countries. The President will be accompanied by Minister of State for MSME, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, and Member of Parliament Dilip Ghosh.

President Kovind will arrive in Cotonou, the largest port city on the south coast of Benin, on Sunday afternoon. There, the President is scheduled to hold talks with the President of Benin, Patrice Talon, and will later travel to Porto Novo, the seat of Beninese Parliament, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

In a special honour extended to India by Benin, President Kovind will be addressing the National Assembly in Porto Novo. The President of Benin will also be hosting a banquet in the honour of President Kovind on the same day.

President Kovind will meet members of the Indian community at a reception hosted in his honour in Cotonou on July 30 before departing for The Gambia.

India will become $ 5 trillion economy

During his visit to The Gambia, the President will hold delegation talks with the President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, in capital Banjul on July 31. As a special gesture, the National Assembly, which is currently in recess, will hold a special session for President Kovind’s address on the same day.

The National Assembly building complex in Banjul is one of the prominent projects in West Africa built under Line of Credit extended by India. President of The Gambia will be hosting a banquet in the honour of the Indian President.

The other elements of the visit include the inauguration of exhibitions on Mahatma Gandhi and Khadi and Indian community reception. President Kovind is further scheduled to depart for Guinea on August 1, the Ministry added.

President Kovind will reach Conakry, the capital of Guinea on August 1 where he will be received by President of the Republic of Guinea, Alpha Conde, and will be accorded a ceremonial welcome. There, the president is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with President Conde on August 2.

At a media briefing last Thursday, Vijay Thakur Singh, secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, said: “The upcoming visit of our Rashtrapati ji to West Africa is a reiteration of our growing relations with Africa and, especially the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and as all the three African countries – Benin, The Gambia and Guinea – are members of this group.” (ANI)

Trump vows ‘substantial reciprocal action’ on France over taxing US tech giants

Washington D.C: United States President Donald Trump on Friday vowed to take “substantial reciprocal action” against France after President Emmanuel Macron signed into law a tax targeting technology giants like Amazon and Google.

“France just put a digital tax on our great American technology companies. If anybody taxes them, it should be their home Country, the USA. We will announce a substantial reciprocal action on Macron’s foolishness shortly. I’ve always said American wine is better than French wine!” the president wrote on Twitter.

Macron this week signed the digital services tax, which imposes a three per cent tax on the annual revenues of technology companies that make at least 750 million euros annually and provide services to users in the country, The Hill reported.

The tax would affect several companies, including U.S.-based tech giants like Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon.

“The United States is extremely disappointed by France’s decision to adopt a digital services tax at the expense of US companies and workers,” White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in a statement.

“The Trump Administration has consistently stated that it will not sit idly by and tolerate discrimination against US-based firms,” he added.

The president further stressed that his administration would deny a request by Apple to avoid stiff tariffs that he had similarly put on Chinese imports.

Trump has increasingly used tariffs to extract concessions over a range of issues, including those unrelated to trade practices. In June, he threatened to tax all Mexican imports to resolve an immigration dispute.

He tweeted on Friday morning that Apple “will not be given Tariff waiver, or relief, for Mac Pro parts that are made in China” and that the company should “Make them in the USA, no Tariffs!” (ANI)

Heavy rains lashes Mumbai, 17 flights diverted, train services from Kalyan to Karjat suspended

Mumbai: Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Friday flooding several areas and severely affecting the road, rail and air traffic.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) reported that 17 flights have been diverted so far. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the MIAL said that the flights are getting delayed by 30 minutes on average due to heavy rains since two hours.

Rail services too have been hampered by the intermittent rains.

“Very heavy rains in Kurla-Thane belt and very-very heavy rains beyond Kalyan. As a precautionary measure, we have suspended services from Kalyan to Karjat/Khopoli. Services on all other corridors of Central railway are running,” Chief Public Relation Officer, Central Railway said.

Mumbai Police requested people not to venture in waterlogged areas and to maintain distance from the sea.

“City is expecting intermittent heavy showers all through the night. We request commuters to not venture in water-logged areas and also request you all to maintain distance from the sea. Please tweet to us or call on 100 in any emergency/need of help,” said Mumbai Police.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said rainfall intensity is “very likely” to increase over North Konkan during next 48 hours.

“Due to the strengthening of monsoon currents and formation of low-pressure area over North West Bay of Bengal, rainfall intensity is very likely to increase over North Konkan during next 48 hours,” IMD said. (ANI)

We salute grit, valour of those who defended India: President on Kargil Vijay Diwas

President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday hailed the “grit and valour of those who defended India” on the 20th anniversary of India’s triumph in the Kargil war.

“On Kargil Vijay Diwas, a grateful nation acknowledges the gallantry of our Armed Forces on the heights of Kargil in 1999. We salute the grit and valour of those who defended India, and record our everlasting debt to those who never returned. Jai Hind,” President Kovind tweeted.

Later in the day, the President will visit the war memorial in Jammu and Kashmir’s Drass to pay tributes to soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1999 conflict.

The war memorial has around 500 tombstones with the name of soldiers inscribed in them.

The Indian armed forces had defeated Pakistan on July 26, 1999. Since then, the day is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Indian Army is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Kargil War today to rekindle the pride and valour of the soldiers who took part in Operation Vijay.

Karnataka BJP delegation arrives in New Delhi to meet Amit Shah

New Delhi: A Karnataka BJP delegation comprising of Jagadish Shettar, Basavaraj Bommai, Arvind Limbavali and other leaders reached Delhi on Thursday.

The delegation will meet Home Minister Amit Shah and party working President JP Nadda later in the day and is expected to discuss the future course of action to form the government in Karnataka.

The Congress-JD(S) government in Karnataka lost the trust vote on July 23.

“Regarding the political scenario, what is happening and everything, we want to discuss with our national president Amit Shah Ji. For that we came here,” BJP leader Jagadish Shettar said.

“You know the situation of Karnataka. The new government has to come. The earlier government has lost the majority and they have given the resignation. We are meeting the BJP leaders to take the readers. We will take their advice on how to go further. Regarding that, our delegation is here,” another BJP leader Arvind Limbavali said.

Asked if the BJP is waiting because no decision has been taken on the resignation of rebel MLAs, he said, “That is not the issue. Maybe, one of the issues. We need to take the guidance of the central party. We will take the guidance of all the senior leaders.” (ANI)

PM Modi should break his silence on US president’s claims: Congress

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to mediate on “Kashmir issue”, has stoked a controversy in the Indian political quarters, with opposition parties asking Modi to clarify his stance and ‘break silence’ on the matter.

“Deeply disturbing & distressing is the @POTUS claim that PM Modi made a request to him for mediation on Kashmir! No Indian PM has ever dared to breach the cardinal principle of ‘no third party mediation’ in terms of 1972 Simla Agreement. Why is PM mum?” tweeted Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress spokesperson.

“India has never accepted third party mediation in Jammu & Kashmir! To ask a foreign power to mediate in J&K by PM Modi is a sacrilegious betrayal of country’s interests. Let PM answer to the Nation!” he said in an earlier tweet.

“Is Govt of India going to call @realDonaldTrump a liar or has there been an undeclared shift in India’s position on third party involvement in #Kashmir?” tweeted NC leader Omar Abdullah.

“Personally I think @realDonaldTrump is talking out of his hat when he says @PMOIndia asked for US involvement in solving the Kashmir issue but I’d like to see @MEAIndia call Trump out on his claim,” said Omar in a subsequent tweet.

“I honestly don’t think Trump has the slightest idea of what he’s talking about. He has either not been briefed or not understood what Modi was saying or what India’s position is on 3rd-party mediation. That said, MEA should clarify that Delhi has never sought his intercession,” tweeted senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.

On the other hand, hours after US President Donald Trump said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked him to help resolve the Kashmir issue, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) India clarified that no such request has been made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US President.

“We have seen @POTUS’s remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by PM @narendramodi to US President. It has been India’s consistent position,” tweeted MEAspokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

“…that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally. Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross border terrorism. The Shimla Agreement & the Lahore Declaration provide the basis to resolve all issues between India & Pakistan bilaterally,” he said in a subsequent tweet.

Trump on Monday said that he would love to play the role of “a mediator” on the “issue of Kashmir” between India and Pakistan.

“Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked me to help with the Kashmir issue; I would love to be a mediator,” Trump said.

ISRO successfully completes launch rehearsal of Chandrayaan-2

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully completed the launch rehearsal of the Chandrayaan-2 mission on Saturday. The Mission is slated to launch on July 22.

“Launch rehearsal of #GSLVMkIII-M1 / #Chandrayaan2 mission completed, performance normal #ISRO,” tweeted ISRO.

Chandrayaan-2 was scheduled to be launched on July 15. However, less than an hour before the launch, the mission was aborted after a technical snag was detected in the rocket.

Chandrayaan-2, which has home-grown technology, will explore a region of Moon where no mission has ever set foot. The spacecraft consists of an orbiter, a lander and a rover together referred to as “composite body”. The probe’s total mass is 3.8 ton and it is expected to land on Moon’s South Polar Region on September 6 or 7 this year.

It will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. This mission will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia and China to carry out a soft landing on Moon. (ANI)

Haridwar: Jal Police, SDRF teams deploy to rescue kanwariyas from drowning

Haridwar: Amid the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, Jal Police and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) teams have been deployed to rescue kanwariyas from drowning near River Ganga in Haridwar, police officials said.

So far six kanwariyas have been rescued by the teams.

“We have marked points where teams of ‘Jal Police’ and SDRF have been deployed to monitor ‘kanwariyas’. So far six ‘kanwariyas’ have been rescued. We have also put up caution boards,” Haridwar SP Janmejay Khanduri said.

The Kanwar Yatra began on the occasion of Shravan Purnima on July 17 and will continue till August 15. Keeping in view the safety of children and for maintaining law and order, Uttarakhand government had announced that all the educational institutions, including schools and colleges in the district, would remain closed from July 23 to July 30.

The order was issued keeping in view the increasing number of devotees visiting Haridwar and the possibility of the closure of the roads for the movement.

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of Lord Shiva’s devotees. The Kanwariyas (pilgrims) visit Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of River Ganga. Later, the holy water is used to dispense as offerings to Lord Siva. (ANI)

Pratap Bhanu Mehta resigns as Ashoka University VC to focus on academics

Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka University has resigned from his post citing return to full-time academic life as the reason behind his resignation. However, he announced that he would step down from his post with effect from August 1.

In a communication to the varsity community, Bhanu said: “I write to announce that I will be stepping down as Vice-Chancellor, Ashoka University, effective August 1st, 2019. The Chancellor has kindly accepted my resignation.”

“Being Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka has been an extraordinary privilege. But after much deliberation, I decided that I need to return to more full-time academic life. I will continue to be associated with Ashoka University. I will continue to teach, learn, write and enjoy the intellectual richness of this wonderful university, and help it in any way I can,” said Pratap Bhanu Mehta.

Further, he said that he had increasingly begun to feel the tension between his vocation as an academic and his obligation as an administrator.

“I was lucky enough to have the full support of the university in all my endeavours, including my writing. But I had increasingly begun to feel the tension between my vocation as an academic and my obligations as an administrator. The practical challenges and responsibilities that come with running a university left me without enough space for my writing and other academic interests. I had lots of freedom but little time. It was time to give academic life one more shot before my synapses irrevocably hardened,” he stated.

“I wanted to carve out a space to engage with the practical and theoretical challenges of our time and return to various unfinished projects. The contemporary world has unsettled so many of our political and philosophical assumptions, and I increasingly felt the need to reorient myself academically. Hence, the decision to step down,” said Mehta.

“The timing of my stepping down as VC may occasion speculation. But I thought it would be best to leave before the new academic year began, rather than cause disruption during the year,” he said (ANI).
