Venezuela crisis: US, Russia present draft resolution to United Nations

Washington D.C: The US today presented a draft resolution on the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, calling for international aid deliveries and early presidential elections, to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

The US draft resolution also stressed on a “deep concern with the violence and excessive use of force by Venezuelan security forces against unarmed, peaceful protesters”, Al Jazeera reported.

In response to the proposal, Moscow lodged a counter-proposal in the UN alleging that the Donald Trump-led US government has been creating situations to initiate a coup and topple the Nicolas Maduro regime, in power in the South American nation.

The Russian draft further criticised any “attempts to intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of Venezuela”.

According to reports, the US is also planning to initiate a campaign for the recognition of Venezuelan Opposition leader Juan Guaido as the legitimate President of the nation.

Meanwhile, the US has not specified any date for the vote on its draft resolution.

The political crisis in Venezuela triggered after Guaido, on January 23, announced himself to be the interim President of the country. Calling the recently held Presidential elections in Venezuela to be rigged, the US recognised Guaido as the legitimate Head of the State, followed by its allies (regarding the issue) that included member nations of the European Union and some of the Latin America countries like Colombia Peru, Equador and others.

Whereas, Russia, China and Cuba have provided allegiance to the leftist government of President Maduro in Venezuela.
